Dedicated server connection issue
I've rented a server, and a day ago me and my friend could play after some hastle with making a single player file, setting that to "friends only" and uploading it. However after yesterdays update he can not connect and the save was set back to "private". Repeats the process of setting it to "friends only", but this time it doesn't work. Maybe the first time was just lucky?

He connects to the server but gets timed out. I'm having no trouble at all. It seems like there is a permission issue? Anyone have some ideas I can try?

sound like when you set the save to friends-only and uploaded that save, it will now use that server "friend list" for access, and since none of you are friend with said server you wont be able to log on, best is just to use a password insted

The problem is if I create a new game with password in "Server manager" it sets the session to private and he can't connect. And the fact that we've already poured some hours into the save we began with...

The "friends only" flag is something you only use for the non dedicated server setup (peer to peer), i.e what was your only option pre update 5.
For the new dedicated server setup, you use a server password to ensure only your friends join.
If the hosting provider tells you to create a single player file first and then upload, then I do not think they are using the new dedicated server setup, but rather the old way of "hosting" a single player game for you.
Did they tell you to upload a single player file with the friends only flag or did you assume you need to do this?

The fact that you can connect means it is not a port forwarding issue. Double check that he is using the same IP AND port that you are using.

he cant connect? even with the IP to the server?

No they didnt tell me to that, something I tried after googling. So I guess that time was just lucky. He can connect and I see in my server dashboard that he is in contact with server but he times out. But if I try to connect I'm in instantly every time.

Ask your friend to remove the server from server manager and adding it back again...just to check that it is not something cached on his client side

We tried that, removing and adding. And disabled his Windows Defender (unlikely but we tried it anyways).

Then the only other things I can think of is that the save file is somehow preventing him from establishing a connection (like a banned list) or there is something wrong with his connection.
The only thing I can suggest you try to eliminate the above, is to make a backup of your file and create a new game in the server manager and see if he can connect. If he can, then it is something with the save...if not, he has a network problem

Yes, that sounds like an idea. But the thing that gets me worried is how one save, that he managed to connect to and play, from one day to the other stops working? If I can't repair a save file that stops working it kind of sucks in the long run. But we will give that a shot.

Yes, I agree...something changed somewhere. It might be due to the changes you tried to make to get it working?
This might be a weird thing to try, but before you do the above, give him the admin password to authenticate with...just to go through authentication with another password...or change the server password

Ok, just remembered that I have the game at my sons account. Connected multiple times without a hitch. It must be at my friends place that something is obstructing him.

Ok, good luck. Maybe ask someone else that you know, that also has the game, to try and connect and confirm the above.
