As for their function; Yes, your supposed to be able to create a path with the recording function and then set it to auto pilot allowing it to just travel in a loop and be loaded and unloaded at locations of truck stops. Now... you can not load and unload at the SAME truck stop, they only function one way at each location, but all of them should be able to load the vehicle with fuel too. It a trade off, you need to fuel and power the stations/trucks, but then you dont have a Belt running the length of the world.
Trace the power line from it to a pole to make sure you're not hooked to a pole that isn't getting power (I've double-tapped poles thinking I connected a wire but actually placed one almost right on top of it).
And yes, as was stated, stations will load/unload automatically and refuel when any vehicle gets within their trigger zone. You have to mind your spacing with multiple vehicles of else one will snatch something out of another truck that it doesn't need to be snatching, or dumping something you don't want to be in another station elsewhere. That's fun. All your shtuff shtops because there's an iron plate in your rotor maker, or in your coal generator.
If you place them on foundations you can drop a fence around the sides to give you a better idea of clearance.
