not true, i cant remember if its caterium sulfur or quartz, but all three i unlocked scanning capability thru bringing mined ore to the mam, and then much later in the tier unlocks i apparently gained the ability to scan for the nodes that i was scanning for in early game.
Coal comes from Coal Power in the HUB Tier 3, which requires space elevator phase 1

Bauxite comes from Tier 7, which requires Space Elevator Phase 3 completed.

There is no unlock what so ever that is initiated or started by picking up either Bauxite or Coal in the M.A.M.
no i know coal and baux you cant. what im saying is some ores you can unlock early in the mam and then later in your progress one of the unlocks in the hub will tell you that you can scan for an item, that you have been able to scan for a while now because of unlocking through mam
Bauxite doesn't have much use beyond the Train elements, and a few minor items. you're all just going to have to wait for Update 4 to see what, if any, plans are in store for Bauxite/Aluminium.
besides Steel/Bauxite being part of regular progression the only other "tech" for coal, or bauxite for that matter, are attained through HDD research and nothing more. possibly at some point CSS will balance this differently or have other elements/machines/items not yet implemented to accommodate having them unlocked upon discovery.
