Duplicated character in single-player session?
So it's a very weird bug and it took me a while to figure out. Basically the following things happen:
- There is a model of my character just standing idle in my base. Its position changes randomly. It doesn't move and I cannot interact with it.
- My inventory randomly changes when I load up my game ! Like when I first crafted my chainsaw, it disappeared the next time I loaded my game. And I eventually got it back later?
- My location on spawn doesn't always match the place I last saved at. Sometimes I'm in my base, sometimes I'm on an expedition.

Which makes me think that... Somehow my character has been duplicated, although I'm exclusively playing solo? And whenever I load a game, the game picks one of the two "players" in my world?

Does this even make sense? I know that UE4 is pretty much built from the ground up for multiplayer, so I'm not surprised to find multiplayer elements in my single-player session.

How do I fix that? My IP changes often, could it be based on that?

This is a known issue and is connected to how the game generates your player ID for a session.
When offline, it can't retrieve your old ID, so it assigns you a new one and drops you into the world as a clone.
The other you in the world still has the items you had when you logged off, so the only way to get that stuff back is to kill your clone.

You mean kill as in... Literally whack him with the Xeno-Zapper?

Edit: Yup, that worked out

When the game runs it automatically logs into Steam as your user. In the menu, bottom-right it should read as "Logged into Steam as: Fox with a cap", assuming Steam is also running in the background.

The case you describe is yes a known issue, and not alien to the devs if the game can't connect to your Steam ID, for some reason (either Steam is not running or it's loosing connection with Steam when saving/reloading a save (effectively offline)).
So when you loggin you might discover that there is a clone there where you last was before quitting the game (or the game crashed).

To everyone with this problem: This only occurs if you start the game without internet access. At this point in time, during early access, this game REQUIRES internet access to work correctly. There is no offline mode, at the moment. If you start steam in "Steam's offline mode" it will break the game and this problem described in this thread will happen.

To prevent this from happening you need to check several things:
1.) Make sure steam is online and logged in before starting the game.
2.) Make sure your internet connection is working before starting the game.
3.) If you see "Unable to establish online session" message when you try to load your save then STOP AND DO NOT LOAD YOUR SAVE. Exit the game entirely back to windows desktop and try to start the game again, then try to load your save again.

If you are still seeing the "Unable to establish online session" message then completely exit the game to the desktop again, check #1, #2, and possibly completely close and exit the steam client, re-open the steam client then try to load the game again.

I'm always online, always check that I'm signed into Steam Friends and I still have this issue almost 100% of the time. Every time I start the game, I check that the connection to both Steam and EGS is active (bottom left corner), and yet the bug always happen. I think it might be because I very frequently switch IP addresses.

Or if the offline thing is as common as it seems to be maybe there should be alternatives in place so that you can kill other "players" especially when they are occupying something, working around the offline bug is easy once you know what to expect.

I would expect explosives to damage characters no matter what they're doing if in range, but this does not happen, having it do so seems to be the easiest way to fix it.

I wonder if the game is mixing up your Steam and EGS accounts. Is it possible to just use one or the other instead of both?

That might be it. I'm not sure what you're doing but you're doing something "weird" with your internet connection. If you just connected to the internet once, start steam, and start the game then this would never happen. Under "Normal conditions" this does not happen. So you're doing something to cause the game to be unable to associate your steam account ID with the steam ID for your save files on your hard drive. Are you using a VPN And changing your destination frequently? If so try disabling your VPN and just playing the game normally and see if this goes away.
