Multiplayer is really hard to play like this :(
Where can I set up the network quality? I can't find that option?!
The game is laggy, the multiplayer is laggy, it is a fact and has been stated by the developers, they know it's laggy and are working on improvements. It's great that you can play with no issues but most people do not have top of the line PCs and ultrafast broadband. The game needs optimisation.
If you're not on broadband with at least 6 Mbps upstream then expect all multiplayer games to be slow. That should be common sense to most people. Slow internet = slow multiplayer games.
I do agree with you that they can try to optimize things further but in reality if people have old computers and slow internet then of course the game's going to run laggy in multiplayer.
People shouldn't complain so much if they're trying to play an unfinished game in Early Access on a potato computer and it runs slow and laggy.
Well, thats great because in Germany some Internetproviders dont let you use more then 3 mbps upload even with a downloadrate of 500 mbps.... So i wouldnt even be able to do it if i wanted....
I set the Network quality on ultra and my friends too - it is better but still not great...
Ain't got anything left to try... so it is up to the game and developer to make it possible for a majority of gamers
But it is still alpha so I'll just wait for opitmization
+1
That is great! But not everyone got this kind of upload speed!
And it is still unbelievably bad optimized! Imagine 3 mbps isn't enough for 2 people...
What bandwith some MMO would need
45% of Steam Users use 4 Core CPUs. Only about 35% of the Steam userbase have CPUs with more than 4 cores. Yes, 6+ cores is becoming the standard, but we are not at an adoption rate high enough yet where PC games can ignore the performance requirements of users with lower core count.
Probably like EA games. And this time I mean the publisher.
I love it when people like you come along. Self entitled smug little people telling everyone that you know best, and that it's everyone else's problems with their PC's because in your specific case it works fine. Let's break down a couple of things here from your various comments in this thread shall we.
1. The game *does* use certain ports. Depending on how your router is set up you may need to port forward. If you have an open NAT, or have UPNP working on your router then you don't. In most other cases you will need to forward at least some ports.
2. 6+ core machines are not "the standard", and people who don't have them are not running on potatoes. I get that you're one of those people who are compensating for something by having a beefy computer, but only about a third of steam users have more than 4 cores. You're one of them, congrats.
3. You don't *need* to have 6 cores to run the game, or even have it running well, at least until you start building mega factories; and even then 4 cores will do you just fine with some frame rate hitches.
4. You don't need to have 15Mbps upload for the game. In fact, unless you modify some .ini files the bandwidth is capped to 64Kbps, so I'm afraid that whatever the circumstances you have that mean you are not experiencing lag they are nothing to do with your "phat pipes".
5. The developers themselves have said that they know there are performance issues in multiplayer. In fact, when you start a multiplayer game, or go into the multiplayer menu, there is a big bloody warning on the screen telling you that multiplayer is less stable. Why you think you know better than the people who design the game is a mystery.
For anyone who's come here looking for actual advice and not e-peen ♥♥♥♥ waving, have a look at this.

YMMV, but some of the suggestions here can solve some of the worse lag issues.
