Is there an easier way to find them, like the crash site maps, earlier in the game while still without flight? Major pain without advanced/MOD settings.

If you have a worldwide power network, you can set up radar towers

The in-game way is a mix of radar towers and object sensor. If you simply must have them early game or otherwise you'd probably just need to look up a map of them.
