Coal Power
Guys, any ideas on how to best lay out a coal power plant? Over the edge of the map,or at blue crater? Or anywhere else?

i just build mine coal generators on top of/adjacent to my water extractors. this way i don't have to run water pipes around the map.

there is no real "best" way.
As long a the pipes are right
You could build flat, using lifts to go over the pipes
Or you could go the Subfloor route
Your Gens are on Foundation 4m Above the bottom foundation, and using and floor holes (Both For lifts and pipes, bought at the awesome shop) Run Coal and water thru the foundation.

I like the coast east of dune desert.

4 under clocked extractors per 8 coal power.
Simple layout > EECCCCCCCCEE (simple same level line, no pumps)

Area is surrounded by lots of coal too.

If I go big I'll use 5 extractors to per 15 underclocked coal power (88.8888)
Enough room there for 100s of water extractors.

You can build it anyway you like, that is the beauty of this game.
With that said, this is how I built an example plant few month back for someone else asking the same question.

I have done both the lake off of the grass hills start area with the 4 normal coal nodes, and the lake south with the 7 oil nodes with all the petrified mushrooms and the 4 normal coal nodes.

I like placing 72 coal generators above the lake and 28 water extractors on the lake. I use 1 of the water extractors for a water tower, usually only have to use 2 pumps. I know there is an extra water extractor but it just seems to work better using an extra extractor for the water tower, I get no fluctuations in the power bar doing this.

On the lake I set up 4 rows of 7 water extractors. Above that I set up another floor with a pipe array, ( At this point I have Mk1 pipes ). On the pipe floor, when I am done, I will have 3 pipes stacked above each other with a 1 pipe separation between pipes. This runs above the outputs of the water extractors and I put a cross connection under each coal generator to each pipe.

Above this floor is another floor with 4 rows of 18 coal generators. The input of the coal generators are above the water pipe array, and the water pipe array is above the outputs of the water extractors. This floor also has the fluid buffer for the water tower.

I have done this several times, so I kind of know how much room I need for each floor and how much clearance for each floor. I also have not tried a horizontal array on the pipe floor, I might have to try it for my next save.

I usually go to the lake off of the grass hills start area. I start with 3 rows of 4 coal generators and work up from there as I get better belts and stackable pipe supports.

When I am done this is very overbuilt, but I have a stable 5400 power that I don't have to ever look at again until time to tear it down and use the coal for something else. You need Mk3 belts for 270 items/sec. And I use Mk2 miners on each coal node overclocked to 270,

This is the end, I start with Mk 1 belts and Mk 1 miner.

Not the blue crater. Gonna need that for oil and steel.

14 coal gen placed in 2 rows of 7 ... Nearby water or on lake/water

There are several nice designs on youtube, start with that until you learn all about fluids, then you can make something pretty.

For location... anywhere with water and coal near each other.
