Grassy Fields -- Coal ??
So I can find 2 Coal resources in Grassy fields, neither of which have water ANYWHERE near them like not within a km. What is the point of having coal if there is no water? How is a grassy fields start supposed to get coal power ?

Not too far north there are 4 nodes right next to a lake?

...and when I did my start in G.Fields, I just belted the coal up from the nodes to the south up to a small lake in the central grassy fields

You have to transport the coal via a conveyor belt as far as possible to the middle of the grassland. There is a lake slightly northwest of the landing site. From there you have to build pipelines.
Here's another tip: initially operate the coal drill with a biomass generator and collect the coal in the container before you connect the conveyor belt to the coal power plant. The first conveyor belts are relatively slow, so it is better if they transport large amounts of coal.

There is a small lake close to the closest coal node. It can hold three or four water extractors.
Also further away there is a larger body of water next to the water falls, there you could have a lot of water extractors.

I prefer to have the coal power plants next to the coal instead of next to the water.

Coal is used for other things too.

It's a building game about logistics.

You build a solution.

Either move the coal or move the water.

looking at the map, between the 2 coasts on either side, there are 2 lakes to the north roughly as far from the 2 pure nodes as the 2 coasts. there is also a small water feature next to one pure that might be deep enough to put a single pump.

gonna fly over there real quick to check.

edit: yup, can fit a single water pump in the little pond that looks like the classic 2 piece peanut shell.

To OP - you are correct there are 2 pure coal nodes in grasslands, but incorrect about water.

1- coal node to south east edge of map on small island needing bridge built for access is perfect for steel factory use. Very close to west of it are several normal iron nodes and tons of impure. Add the also very close 3 limestone nodes, and you can do steel beams, pipes, and EIB. Build steel factory at iron nodes and belt the coal over, very easy.

2- coal node on the high mesa platform to west of starting loc is very easily accessed once you build ramp up to it. There are TWO sources of water very close by that node, so what I did was:
a) literally just below that coal mesa is very tiny lake, just big enough for 1 water extractor. It should be large enough for 2, but could not find way to do it, so I put down 1. That is enough to overclock it at 180 units of water = 4 coal generators = 300 MW. Perfect for beginner plant.

b) not very far north - north west of that coal mesa is much larger lake. Enough to fit 6 water extractors easily, perhaps more but I put down 6. All you need is 5 standard power to allow 12 coal generators. With 4 from original small plant that means 16 coal generators = 1200 MW = needs 240 coal (which is exactly the output of the pure coal node without any overclock, just Mk2 miner.

These two small bodies of water with 16 coal generators is 1200 MW, all easily belt fed coal, with sulfur very close to the mesa coal as well for later mixing for explosives (by then you will have slugs to overclock and produce enough extra coal)

TLDR - right below the high platform mesa coal East of starting grasslands loc is 1 pure coal with tiny lake = 300 MW starter plant. Just to north - north west is big enough lake to have total 16 generators = 1200 MW. Distance is easily done by Mk2 belt, unless you want to truck transport for some reason. Either way, hope that helps.

p.s. not too far but lot farther than 'start of game' distance are 4+ coal nodes to the West (which is also eventually where an easy starter location of oil is found). You can eventually expand that way for more coal power + oil refinery. I believe ppl / streamers call that are Blue Crater if you want to google it. Otherwise, the big pit location most ppl know about is to the north, going towards the Northern Forest area. Huge lake + lots of coal + iron for power + steel factory.

The game is about figure out Logistics of how to get x item to to Y location.
but the are Coal Nodes near water like mine in the Rocky Desert

Get comfortable with scouting the map and going further away now, or the challenge will be even worse down the line. You can drag a power pole anywhere, you can scan for coal at any time and make markers on the map (and highlight them) to help guide you. There's an area just north of the grass fields that has coal right next to a lake, just requires some scouting to plan it out. Don't forget about zooping ramps and the zipline as well.

The basic solution for the Grassy Fields is to build down to a cliff to the south for a Normal coal deposit. Get a Truck running from it to your starting position, unload to a vehicle station and distribute both to steel foundries and coal power plants.

All other deposits are bit further away and should be developed as the demand increases later.

Grassy Fields is notorious (as described) for having massive open spaces for building, and a lot of basic resource deposits (low purity though) spread all over the place, but all more advanced resources are further out and/or less accessible.

If you build a bridge to the node in the south and build a truck stop next to the node, you can easily provide coal for +8 coal generators wherever you transport the coal, with just one tractor.

The small lake north of where your drop-pod arrived, can fit a few water pumps...

When I start in the Grass Fields; early game, I usually pop down a small coal power plant to get me going right near the Coal & Sulfur Node, if I have it I make Compact Coal.

The excess coal I truck over to my starter base. There is a good size lake just to the west of the iron nodes that is big enough to fit 3 (or more) water extractors.

Isn't there coal just south east of grassy with a small lake next to it. Not a big lake tho, but its a start for a few generators.

belts? or pipeline the water if you prefer that...one time I set up a vehicle loop that pickedu p coal and dropped it off where i wanted it, but that was just for fun, it was probably very inefficient.
