Here's another tip: initially operate the coal drill with a biomass generator and collect the coal in the container before you connect the conveyor belt to the coal power plant. The first conveyor belts are relatively slow, so it is better if they transport large amounts of coal.
Also further away there is a larger body of water next to the water falls, there you could have a lot of water extractors.
I prefer to have the coal power plants next to the coal instead of next to the water.
Coal is used for other things too.
You build a solution.
Either move the coal or move the water.
gonna fly over there real quick to check.
edit: yup, can fit a single water pump in the little pond that looks like the classic 2 piece peanut shell.
1- coal node to south east edge of map on small island needing bridge built for access is perfect for steel factory use. Very close to west of it are several normal iron nodes and tons of impure. Add the also very close 3 limestone nodes, and you can do steel beams, pipes, and EIB. Build steel factory at iron nodes and belt the coal over, very easy.
2- coal node on the high mesa platform to west of starting loc is very easily accessed once you build ramp up to it. There are TWO sources of water very close by that node, so what I did was:
a) literally just below that coal mesa is very tiny lake, just big enough for 1 water extractor. It should be large enough for 2, but could not find way to do it, so I put down 1. That is enough to overclock it at 180 units of water = 4 coal generators = 300 MW. Perfect for beginner plant.
b) not very far north - north west of that coal mesa is much larger lake. Enough to fit 6 water extractors easily, perhaps more but I put down 6. All you need is 5 standard power to allow 12 coal generators. With 4 from original small plant that means 16 coal generators = 1200 MW = needs 240 coal (which is exactly the output of the pure coal node without any overclock, just Mk2 miner.
These two small bodies of water with 16 coal generators is 1200 MW, all easily belt fed coal, with sulfur very close to the mesa coal as well for later mixing for explosives (by then you will have slugs to overclock and produce enough extra coal)
TLDR - right below the high platform mesa coal East of starting grasslands loc is 1 pure coal with tiny lake = 300 MW starter plant. Just to north - north west is big enough lake to have total 16 generators = 1200 MW. Distance is easily done by Mk2 belt, unless you want to truck transport for some reason. Either way, hope that helps.
p.s. not too far but lot farther than 'start of game' distance are 4+ coal nodes to the West (which is also eventually where an easy starter location of oil is found). You can eventually expand that way for more coal power + oil refinery. I believe ppl / streamers call that are Blue Crater if you want to google it. Otherwise, the big pit location most ppl know about is to the north, going towards the Northern Forest area. Huge lake + lots of coal + iron for power + steel factory.
but the are Coal Nodes near water like mine in the Rocky Desert

All other deposits are bit further away and should be developed as the demand increases later.
Grassy Fields is notorious (as described) for having massive open spaces for building, and a lot of basic resource deposits (low purity though) spread all over the place, but all more advanced resources are further out and/or less accessible.
The small lake north of where your drop-pod arrived, can fit a few water pumps...

The excess coal I truck over to my starter base. There is a good size lake just to the west of the iron nodes that is big enough to fit 3 (or more) water extractors.
