Lighting up with signs in 1.0
Hi all. I don't understand, it's a bug or new "improvements", but most of the signs now is useless as a light sources. Before the update, i use 4m and square 2x2m signs as lamps. Now they can only light themselves and a small (2-4m or a half of a foundation) radius around them. But, when i walk off 10-20m, the light radius increases (visually). Does anyone face this problem?

They have changed the unreal engines r.AOGlobalDistanceField.MinMeshSDFRadius parameter to 20 obviously for performance reasons.

If you want you can simply override it with 10 or less and you will have same effect as before.
Open console (tilde key) and type
r.AOGlobalDistanceField.MinMeshSDFRadius 10

If you don't want to type it in every time, you can add the following:

[SystemSettings]
r.AOGlobalDistanceField.MinMeshSDFRadius=10

to this file

%localappdata%\FactoryGame\Saved\Config\Windows\engine.ini

I believe they nerfed lighting for optimization reasons and it feels like they removed or disabled lumen all together

Two largest signs works fine, like before 1.0 I think, if devs do this for optimization reasons, then why big signs lighting do not change? And second thing - many other players used signs for lighting, this is are one of the most important things in factory design. I think, devs know that and cant just delete this feature. (i don't think, sign lighting nerf can do so much for optimization)

I haven't done a ton with it on my new save yet, but it seems to work like it did before to me.

I understand this but I think the end user should choose how to play, in my case I have a good PC and it runs great with lumen

They still light up fine - have you compared them to the actual lighting objects (and noticed that all of those have quite a large area relative to a 2m label sign)?

I finally started some decorating and have just found only the 'billboard' signs are working.. Same with all the little lights on machines and conveyors etc. Massive disappointment over this nerf.

Not having settings for it in the game itself, after so many spent so long building factories specifically with this in mind in U8 is a bit rough.
+the setting on that page only affects 3+4m label signs, others are still screen space only.. It looks and feels ridiculous to go from dark to all lit up because you've moved a little and you're now facing a sign..

My enthusiasm's just been completely deflated.

Only works for 3+4m label signs for me. Does nothing to resolve the screen space issue for the other signs. Lighting will only occur if the light source is visible. And the amount of lighting is determined by the amount of visibility - if facing front on, full lighting, if off to the side with just a sliver visible just a tiny bit of lighting.

Hopefully soon it'll be corrected (with at least settings to do so) or a mod.

Hum, I am still not at the point to do decorating but the posts there looked promising. Then lets vote this up so we can have the old config back in an update as I have old saves where I did use signs a lot for athmosphere and would like to do too in the new 1.0 save.
Sorry it did not worked out in the end for all signs, I did not knew.

No need for apologies - not your fault! And just being able to add the 3+4m labels is still a big enough improvement to keep me playing (I was about to quit until resolved either by CS or a mod).

Those sighns are actualy not supposed to be abused like that. On the other hand I do understand why people are doing it and I do it myself as well. It seems like the real problem is the lack of small wall lights of different shapes that main purpose is cosmetics.
