A machine almost fits on a 1x1 foundation, so I'd need 2 to fit it all the way and an extra foundation for conveyors? (so total of 3), I'll build a space of 4 or 5 foundations for it. Just to make sure I'll have room for all the alignment and organization I want, and for possible future infrastructure going through. Same goes for stairs. Technically you can make a spiral staircase in a 3x3 area with them. But I'll go 4x4 instead to make sure I have all the space I need.
And who cares about the catwalk stairs taking up more space? It's incredibly easy and fast to build MASSIVE structures in this game anyway.
I didn't think about it at the time, but maybe you can copy them with MMB, then put them into a blueprint, save the blueprint, move the blueprint file to your new 1.0 world, and load it in, can someone try this?
