Why is lighting so bad?
One would think by now (UE 5.3) that lighting would be better than this.
Nope. Just UTTER DARKNESS unless you're in direct line of sight of the source.
/facepalm

There are a few guides on Youtube on how to do proper lighting and they are actually pretty interesting! You can use signs as light sources as well, put lights on the ground so they make a nice effect on your factory, try it out.

Also, you can turn Global Illumination off in the settings, so you get the old lighting back.

It is utter darkness because you are expected to install lights to fix that. If you don't want that, simply turn of global illumination.

Wow, your shots are really really dark. Maybe play with the settings? They're darker than any I've seen, inside factories can get a bit dark but not like that so I'm thinking its a settings thing

Turn off global illumination to reduce the reliance on local light sources.

Later in the game you get access to lamps and lights.

I have a light... on the ceiling (second screenshot).

You can clearly see it doesn't provide anything but spot lighting.

I will muke with the settings, but I would think it would be better than this default.

Thanks captain obvious. Isn't it obvious? (look at shot 2). That's not my flashlight.
I have global illum off.

You are welcome Captain Jerk, I was genuinely trying to help you. You messed up your settings somewhere, because mine are no where near that dark and I have global illumination on High

yeah those spotlight have a narrow field of illumination. like ppl said you can turn off global illuminations. Or you could design some of your own light in the blueprint machine using signs. set the brightness high , colour to what you want, or dim and make mood lighting.

How was I being a jerk, where I pointed out my screenshot showed I have a light installed? :p

Not trying to be a jerk.
Installing lights don't do ANYTHING to make the games lighting any better. Having global illum on or off does change things a little, but doesn't make the game look as it should. Many other games I've played have way better lighting than this game does.

Anyhow, no worries. I'm mucked with the settings all I care to. It is what it is.

The lighting in the game (or lack thereof, might be a better description), is why the Perma-Daytime mods have been so popular. That's always been one of the first ones I get (hopefully mods are getting updated to work with 1.0 fairly soon).

You need an absolute ton of light, and the distance from the source to the thing it hits, can't be very far - otherwise you just end up with hardly any light.
That's why so many seem to have switched to using signs, which for some weird reason, works better as a light source.

They're really not any better at illuminating things than the actual lights are (at least, in my opinion), they're just way more flexible (plus you have colours!).

Lights are awful in this game. Who wants to put a ceiling light on every tile to light up a factory. Even then it just does not look good or even acceptable. Has been like this for years, so don't expect it to change.
