Overflow stores on random occasion and not fifo.
This is exactly the reason I use programmable splitters for these occasions.
Afaik the slugs work fine.
You probally don't want the slugs to overflow because there is a small chance you carry more than a stack of them.
The best way (imo) before programmable splitters is using a paralel merger line for overflow and use another output of the smart splitter

edit: The slugs actually travel along the belt visually as they should but the item gets stuck in the splitter. This might be related to the already known visual bugs with belts being wrongfully empty/full in Update 8.
And as i said: It's a known problem. Stop pretending it's new.

I'm pretty sure your slugs are not the only items that get stuck.
Why even use overflow on a collectables belt? Any backup caused by dropping in too much can be solved with a container.
Power slugs can not be sunk, where does the overflow go to?
And even longer waiting for the machine to sort them, send them to each color machine, turn them into power shards and send them to a storage container
But I had a container just for power slugs, wood, leaves, flowers, and alien remains, so much less a hassle letting the machines do it while I do something else
Just realized, that last SS (Smart SPlitter) at the MISC Storage should be a M (Merger)

OT:
Yeah smart splitters have a habit of keeping 3 or 4 items. Either first send in some junk items to get stuck or accept some slugs in the machinery. Definately a bug, an old one, with low priority annoying that it is.
Second: There are 3 slug colors and 3 outputs on a smart splitter. See my point?
