Power Slug automation - weird behavior
I'm currently encountering a rather weird behavior in my mini factory for power shards. I have one container to drop off any slugs from my inventory and have them sorted automatically by color with smart splitters.

Overflow

Splitter -> Color

Input

The purple slugs seem to be bugged as they won't move though my smart splitters as 'overflow', they only move forward if I set it to 'any' / 'any undefined'. Does anyone else encounter this behavior? I don't use any mods.
This setup worked fine in my last save in Update 7 and also worked fine in my current save until a few days ago, which is even weirder. I will gather some more slugs and try to reproduce it.

You need to use "any undefined" in the smart splitter in order to make it work.
Overflow stores on random occasion and not fifo.
This is exactly the reason I use programmable splitters for these occasions.
Afaik the slugs work fine.
You probally don't want the slugs to overflow because there is a small chance you carry more than a stack of them.
The best way (imo) before programmable splitters is using a paralel merger line for overflow and use another output of the smart splitter

As I said, overflow worked fine a few days ago and I use the same setup for all my storage facilities and never had any backups. I also have overflow protection in case I dump several stacks. It's just the slugs that behave like this.

edit: The slugs actually travel along the belt visually as they should but the item gets stuck in the splitter. This might be related to the already known visual bugs with belts being wrongfully empty/full in Update 8.

My smart splitters never did work like this in update 5, 6 and 7. It seems your system stopped running on luck in update 8.

It's a known problem. Stop pretending it's new.

I'm pretty sure your slugs are not the only items that get stuck.

Why even use overflow on a collectables belt? Any backup caused by dropping in too much can be solved with a container.

Power slugs can not be sunk, where does the overflow go to?

Yeah, it’s not just slugs that get “stuck” in smart splitters, with overflow set on one output, anything can and the only way to unstick it is set to any or dismantle the splitter.

You could just use the 3 outputs for each color slug. You wouldn't need any overflow or undefined settings for that.

I think it's handy to use straight forward for leaves, wood, flower petals.

idk why people automate power slugs it takes a few seconds to craft them into power shards

It takes fractions of seconds to toss them into a storage container

And even longer waiting for the machine to sort them, send them to each color machine, turn them into power shards and send them to a storage container

It's good that you can automate almost everything, but not everything is worth automating.

If you need them right then maybe…
But I had a container just for power slugs, wood, leaves, flowers, and alien remains, so much less a hassle letting the machines do it while I do something else

Just realized, that last SS (Smart SPlitter) at the MISC Storage should be a M (Merger)

I'm not pretending, no idea what your problem is mate. This system worked for almost 500 hours over several updates and saves and it literally never got stuck. It only happens with this specific item. But as it seems to be a known bug I will just build around it until it's fixed.

This. Anything I come across that's not building material (wood, leaves, alien corpse, slugs) gets tossed in the container for repurposing and later, whenever I need them, there they are ready to be ficsit'd. Why anyone would be against this setup is a mystery to me.

OT:
Yeah smart splitters have a habit of keeping 3 or 4 items. Either first send in some junk items to get stuck or accept some slugs in the machinery. Definately a bug, an old one, with low priority annoying that it is.
Heiinz Dec 14, 2023 @ 10:30pm
First: Yes you want "any undefined" you do not want "overflow". Overflow means the other lines are stuck.
Second: There are 3 slug colors and 3 outputs on a smart splitter. See my point?
