here's what I do
you need the parachute and Hypertubes, and optionally a click/hold key/mouse app
I make a cannon and shoot myself straight up, open the chute and glide in one direction.
with the click/hold button app set to W, I turn it on and go do something as I glide openning the map.
You could just shoot yourself in a direction, which is faster , but you might end up with gaps.
Or you can upload your save to the SCIM, and hit reveal map, and not bother with any of that.
Did for mine...weird.
Course I was driving on a tall constructed bridge (was building as I drove) so maybe not such a great example.
That is clearly a bug and needs to get addressed.

Long before I got to radar (and didn't use it except for one time) I discovered all of the map with Power Tower Ziplining (you reach every mountain top in a few seconds) and Paraglider (Paraglider for the time before you have Ziplining and Power Towers unlocked):
With Paraglider just build a "stairway to heaven" (stairs unlock in the Awesome Shop when you buy CATWALKS) and from there you can paraglide across all the map.
The good thing: You can open your map during paragliding and orient yourself, placing map markers, etc.
To head back to your base you have either to use your Explorer or - pro tip - activate no death crate = keep everything after deathwhich spawns you directly back to the HUB after death.
Filters are your friend.
It's not perfect but persistence wins out.
Radar towers do the job just fine at that point.
They override all carefully and accuratley crafted markers.
They override them with ugly, only half as meaningfull icons. Hours and hours of work get wiped out.
Built it one time, erased and never built again.
Shame on CSS for this loveless, careless piece of development!
Consider you're a pioneer on a newly discovered planet (apparently we have interstellar travel but not mastered the planetary surface scanner, go figure :D ), so you're cartographically drawing a map of your surroundings as you explore. Well, you'd not be able to draw while driving (keep both hands on the steering wheel bub), so that would explain why no map reveal while driving.
let's just admit it's something on the long list they have to fix in 1.1, given that they are aware of, which I doubt if it's not reported on questions.satisfactorygame.com
Drones will also reveal a strip of map along their flight path which kinda ruins my theory too, but meh, don't let the details get in the way of a good story.
