How much should I be producing?
Basically I've only just gotten to steel production, but I've basically run out of nearby exploitable resources. With how important it is to build things, I was making sure to have a full tier 1 belt of every resource, except reinforced iron plates, which I've got about 30pm. But at this point I still need to automate rotors and now steel, while I have no iron nodes that are closer than 1.5k meters from me, and building the conveyors out that distance is mind-numbingly boring. Am I overproducing basic resources, or am I just not being patient enough?

If possible upgrade your miners to MK2 - 3. I got belts going all over the map, need those resources.

It might help in most cases to build your items at the nodes if you are shipping materials instead of items. Most notable exceptions to that rule being quickwire and bolts.

I can tell you though that you will eventually want a lot more steel production than a simple mk1 belt.

How much you want is entirely up to you. Some people produce very few ppm and just leave the game running for hours instead.

Remember that you'll be upgrading your productivity over time. Faster miners, faster belts, overclocking machines, finding more pure nodes. The speeds you're dealing with currently are a fraction of what you can produce in the endgame.

Entire factory rebuilds and overhauls are not uncommon.

Yes!

Produce as much as you can and as much as you are willing to produce.
Generally whatever you make in one tier you need to 10x it in later tiers. Never think you are making too much of any low tier item.

very true, started with 1 computer machine, now I got 40

Short answer is..whatever you now have is not enough

The correct answer is more.
Dog Apr 2, 2023 @ 6:27am
Always more.

Trying a 2nd file now, I got to the last phase just to see whats what. Tier 1 belts will not get you anywhere in any time that could be considered decent. I have everything on tier 4 belts and still wanted more. With all I learned on this new file the best tips I can give you without spoilers is more, faster, and spread your machines out.

This is my favourite example
6 heavy frames/minute (3 manufacturers @ 100%) took 960 iron ingots or 2 Mk3 miners on pure iron nodes, The last project, at this point, requires 6000 heavy frames.

That is how the game scales.
Whatever you have now is not enough for the next tier.

I get everybody telling me I just need to make more, but the problem isn't that I'm worried about not producing enough basic resources, the problem is that I have no nearby ore veins I can exploit due to 100% utilization of everything within 1.5 kilometres of me. I'm stuck without being able to progress without building belt lines out that far in order to get more ore veins to exploit. This means I'm not using my current resources for the right things. So I'm less concerned with what I'll need to be producing an endgame amount of supplies, and more concerned about what I need to cut back on in order to get to tier 2 miners

You may have started in a terrible place. Before starting a new base have a wander around...you might start next to a single node when 1 km away there are 4 iron, 2 copper and 2 limestone all within spitting distance of each other...a much better starting location.

I mean, it didn't seem that bad starting out. I've got 10 impure iron, and 5 normal, for a total of about 600 iron ore per minute, but it just doesn't seem to keep up. I can't even get rotors automated, much less steel
