Best way to explore the map?
I'm in Tier 3/4 (restarting from a Tier 5 save), and haven't really gone beyond the Crater and Grass Fields. What's the best way to explore the world? Should I start exploring it yet, or should I wait until later?

Really up to you, but for me, after I made the Parachute, blade runners, Basher, Rebar Gun and nobelisks, I go slug/HDD/Mercer Sphere/Somersloop hunting.
I usually grab the Boombox from the awesome shop for the turbobass, great for dealing with Crab Flies.
With a Hybertube cannon BP I made, powered by Biomass burners I can get anywhere.... Sometimes I'll use the explorer to get around.

In that Tier, hook up a Packaged Fuel (or Biofuel) production line to your Dimensional Depot and strap on a Jetpack. That plus the Parachute is :chefskiss:

Start laying a "round the world" rail. Just surveying for routes and destinations is a lot.
Power Towers and Zip Lines (and eventually the Hover pack)

Your going to have to put in a map spanning world electrical network. The power lines can be built at max distance from the top of a tower.

It's slower travel speed but initially its less fuss than trains and hypertubes.

Alright, thank you all! I think I'll unlock Tier 5 for the jetpack, and then build up a rail network.
I like the idea of power towers, but since railroads already transport power, I don't think I'll need them.

Good suggestions but let me just add; pack something ranged to defend yourself with, stun rebar if you can get hold of it. There are some very nasty little spiders roaming around and a good few piggies around the world that aren't pioneer friendly.

Agreed
I like the power towers and Hoverpack. I never need to worry about fuel, and where I'm going, I'm going to need power anyways. Nor do I worry about getting places in a hurry. There's no rush.
All you need is just a zeno-basher

I started exploring early. I built some stuff then let it run and build up product while I explored stocking up on the necessary stuff to build it over long term.

I enjoy exploring so I just ran around building ramps to everything and I had the depot to make it easier to not run out of, nor have to carry, alot of supplies just to run around exploring.

I found this a nice way to explore while the product built in the background and got hard drives which I enjoyed opening alot and getting the reveal of new alternates. I also got other stuff that you find as you run around, on a hard drive hunt, so I had lots to do back at my base camp, with refueling my product creation and doing the reveal stuff, like hard drive reveals and other research.
Hover pack and cover the world in power poles are you explore. Its one of the easiest ways, power all over for expansion and never runs out :)

Use the Early Hover Pack mod. Still need to put power poles down etc but you get it right at the beginning of the game which makes building so much easier.

Less cheaty than using the Flymode in advance settings which I used to use and got completely bored and deleted that save. Never again.

Alternatively, you can just give yourself the Hoverpack or whatever else you want early using the SCIM, by modifying the save instead of using a mod.
Way i do it is just exploring around me until i'm to the point i can make radar and power towers, then explore by building power towers and ziplining to it, build another, zip line to that. place radar towers at intervals and then loop around the map, then i got power and a pretty good coverage of what resources are where.
