If they were going to get rid of it, it would have been during 1.0. They're not deleting it, but they're also not developing it further.

It's a bummer they never finished it.

Still hope a later DLC will take care of this little zone and add more map areas.

There was alot of back and forth about the island but in the end the players all said they wanted it so the devs expanded the map boundary so we now have access to the whole island and said they would put nothing there but leave it as is.
