How do I use the Object Scanner?

I'm not sure how to set it to scan for something. No matter what, it says out of range, and I can't set it to anything. Am I doing something wrong?

Hold LMB and the selection wheel will come up. Pick what you want and let go.

Move around if it says out of range to find stuff.

The problem is holding LMB does nothing. There's no options other than cancel.

Perhaps it can't detect anything when it's built, and you have to upgrade it to detect stuff. I thought it would at least have SOME use to it out of the gate. Crafting it is pointless at first then, huh? That kinda feels strange.

Fortunately most of the things you can scan for are quick research in the MAM. Nuts, berries, and bacon argonic are all unlocked with the first node in their respective chains. Slugs are the second node in their chain.

Crash sites are deep in the quartz chain, and enemy mode is at the bottom of the alien organism chain.

I dont know if any of the objects do not need research to unlock or not but since you have nothing in it that sure sounds like everything needs research. Its easy though, just need to go find that stuff and feed to MAM.

Seems hard giving up power slugs or hard drives early in the game but its only one and there are a great many of each to find.

I only use it for a nobelisk detonator, imo it's an obsolete item like a beacon

It is handy with slugs, but most are so easy to find, that I also do seldom use the scanner. Enemy scanner, what is the use? And it is hard to unlock also. The MAM do have handy stuff to unlock, mostly the MK2 power poles, etc...

Limited?
Once researched, You can make as many as you like, however if you use one it's gone.
There are 4 recipes to make them,
I don't like the ones with Mycelia or alien protein ingredients, I use the nut,berry and mushroom one.
