The best thing you can hope for is randomized nodes. I think there might even be a mod out there that already does it. And in the end, it accomplishes the same goal as a random map would, because the thing that matter the most are the resources and where they are.
I don't think a random map is a good answer to the problem of replayability. I don't even think such answer exists, in fact. I guess that's just the nature puzzle games. It's fine to have your time with it and move on.
However you still can create very nice maps with a well programmed map generator.
It would require a bit of programming for the creatures, but nothing too serious.
I don't see finding the right site for a factory as a difficulty, rather an obstruction.
The core gameplay loop is already complex enough and biling something that looks nice already needs a lot of work.
I'd rather not find out that the only place big enough for the factory I wanted has a fixed hardcoded immortal giant flying ray in its path...
like others said, maybe another big map after release as dlc or so.
that stuff happens when a human meddles with something and doesn't keep everything in mind, like grass generator after changing the terrain it is on
