Splitting an odd number of items
So I was wondering what the community has as far as suggestions on how to split things up kinda oddly.

Let's say I am making 100 of an item and I need to split 60 into one machine and 40 into the another.

How would you go about it?

So far what I've done is let the first machine that needs 60 fill to capacity with the item and then split it off after so the other 40 goes to the other machine.

Though is this an effective way to do it, or is there a better way? The only other theory I have is to maybe use a smart splitter and set the side where I need 40 to be the overflow side.

Thank you for your time and I hope you all have a wonderful morning/afternoon/evening/night!

Allowing the machines to do the splitting for you is common (and is the basis of the manifold setup).
For the stated example, smart splitter. Prioritize one output into a mk1 belt for the 60, and overflow the 40 into another.

Split into both and it will eventually balance out once the 40 machine fills up. This is how manifold setups work. Depending on belt speed it may take time to get up to 100% efficiency.
The smart splitter is the better option if you have it unlocked in any case (for your example).
This is also how manifolds take forever to spin up. They need to almost completely fill their headroom before they function properly.

In what quantities do they come out of the machine? If they for example make 20 items per minute you can merge it into the right proportions.

If it's 100 items from one machine the manifold or smart splitter, set to the 60 side as first output, overflow to the 40 output, will bring the best solutions.

Just let the 100 flow into the machine that takes 60 and in the one that takes 40 at the same time. It will balance automatically after overflow

You can actually split a stream into 5 by splitting it into 6 and feeding back one of the 6 paths back into the original stream. No overflow needed.

upon looking up the term "manifold" as it pertains to satisfactory, it turns out ive been doing both manifold builds and balance builds all along. thank you all for all the feedback here. i was worried i was doing it improperly, but seems both ways were right all along haha.

One thing I do with manifold design, especially for small plants with no overproduction, is to build each step, one at a time before adding belts to the output. This allows the belts and internal storage to fill-up. For example, with an iron node, start with the miner, and wait till it's output is full before connecting the belt to the smelters, then when they are full, connect the output belts to the constructors, and so until you get the finished product. It takes more time, but you get and keep all of your machines operating at 100%
