When in doubt - make it taller. My first base was 5x 4m tall and it was nowhere near enough lol.
The way CS has approached lighting and rendering in order to achieve such good performance for buildings doesn't work with voxel based solutions. This is why the "terraforming" available in the game is purely mesh based where you are essentially just removing obstacles.
I built one of my bases on floating foundations on the big lake near the waterfalls.
The stepped levels of the grassy fields is awkward to build on as their are some stepped levels but thats easy to overcome , make a few foundations on top of cliff edge then build outwards and box in the slopes , you now have a level area big enough to put something on.
