Portable Miners in the mid/late game
As usual, not sure if someone else has suggested this:

I think portable miners should get phased out later in the game. One simple option is to not make them part of the Mk2+ miner construction requirements.
EDIT: Or, let them stack? So I can mass produce them somewhere and pick up a stack in my inventory. This is nice, gives us one more thing to automate.

Reason: it is a little tedious to have to get out the equipment bench and craft 2+ miners every time I want to tap a new node. I'm ok with the first few times, I'm even ok with noobs not realizing they can put an equipment bench down in the wild and craft one, which leads to frustrating trips back to base. But once you realize this, there is no redeeming game play value in doing it for the nth time.

This is a bit of a symptom of something that bugs a friend and I about this otherwise fantastic game.. it doesn't feel like YOU, the builder, are getting stronger in some areas. You get better weapons, you get faster, you fly, all cool. But your health stays the same, you don't get any faster at building (no blueprints, for instance), and you have to keep making these stupid miners!

Ok.. rant over, but please consider! Easy fix...

I agree. I use two mod. The stack mod ( stack up to 500 ) and I can build and stack of 500 miners. So to place one on a mine, just brake it down to one, and pick that one miner. As for the miners, just place the miner and it will deduct fro the amount of miners that you have. A for automated them and mass manufacture them, the mod Cheat recipe will be able to manufacture the miner using one plate and one rod. but you can not manufacture the vanila model. So with no mods, you also can not manufacture the miner, because it is not on the list of items to be manufacture using the Assembler ( the 2 items input )

The miners should be stackable and be able to manufacture in the Assembler for mass production.

And I don't really care, I don't see a problem to craft 3 miners once in 10-20 hours...
I wouldn't mind so much if portable miners could stack in inventory, instead of taking up individual slots.
So if I go to mine a new area and want to set up 5 mk3 miners, I either need to craft 15 miners on site which is tedious, or give up 15 inventory slots for the trip there which is limiting if I have other constructions to do.

Really? This is your complaint about the game? You have to keep a stack of plates and a stack of rods in your inventory, because that's what you make workbenches, equipment shops, and portable miners with?

You're seriously gonna get mad that you have to make some stuff if you want to make some other stuff... in a game about making stuff that makes stuff?

No. It sounds to me like they find something a bit tedious and would be happy if some of that tedium were reduced via automation or stacking like virtually everything else in the game... in a game about automating making stuff.
Exactly right.

The inconvenience of portable miners being an ingredient in automated miners is minor and infrequent, but it is an annoyance to me.

You can automate construction of portable miners, and I would do that, except they don't stack which makes them inconvenient to carry to a new build site.
So I craft them on site with an equipment workshop. Except that means freeing enough inventory space to hold them, and then sitting and watching the craft bench while it makes them (a bit less inconvenient now that you can lock the craft bench/equipment workshop on with spacebar, comapred to when you had to hold left click).

It's the one bit of tedious manual crafting that remains past early game, so to me it feels quite out of place.

There are 369 useful ore nodes in the entire map. At 3 portable miners per Mk 3 Miner, that's a maximum of 1,107 miners to build in a single game, assuming you can even find all the nodes. This costs a total of 2,214 iron plates and 4,428 iron rods.

I've spent more time and materials on "early-game" production lines (10/minute motors springs immediately to mind, as does any reasonably large steel smelting facility), never mind the staggering amount of resources and time it takes to set up a 50 GW fuel power plant a little later.

For that matter, a 50x50 square of concrete platforms costs 5,000 plates and 15,000 bags of concrete, and I've built dozens of those just to put machines on. The material costs for portable miners are, relatively speaking, downright tiny.

There is an alternate recipe which allows you to produce them in a Manufacturer, but it adds 1,107 Motors and 4,428 Steel Pipes and makes them for you at a rate of 1 per minute... which is both slower and much more costly than spending 60-90 seconds building an equipment workshop and making even a dozen miners by hand, on-site, as needed. The only possible use I can see for automated production of portable miners is producing mass quantities of drones.

When you consider the ease with which they are constructed, and the fact that you aren't likely to need more than a handful at a time, this complaint really begins to sound a lot less valid.

I have received a "Community Warning" for "disrespect" in reference to my previous post, wherein I described my absolute incredulity at the entitlement and/or laziness implied by a user's complaint that playing the game as intended is "tedious" and/or "limiting".

It is disappointing that some people feel that "failure to enthusiastically agree with their position" is grounds for attempting to remove someone from the discussion.

I will be withdrawing from this discussion, to avoid any further "disrespectful" outbursts of astonishment.

You can find the alternative recipe to automate the production of portable miners in a manufacturerthen connect that productionline to a container and say goodbye to handcrafting the next miners
You can, but because portable miners don't stack, if you need 10 of them then it takes 10 slots of your inventory to carry them. Personally I find that worse than handcrafting on site
Apparently we also need miners for drones... Please let me stack them!

If you are out and about with a vehicle you dont even have to build a equip bench, one is available in the vehicle. (Just wanted to point that out for some new players) I played for about 80 hours or so before I saw the little tab in vehicle storage that would switch to equipment bench.
Not sure I knew about the bench... good tip. But if I'm out tapping a node and building belts, my vehicle is probably just far enough away (and that could be 10 steps away) that crafting an equipment bench is faster.

Letting miners stack is a simple solution for the player. They are classified as equipment, but so are beacons and we can stack those. Treat them like beacons please!
It's like 20 seconds of crafting once every ten hours. Pull yourselves together.
+1
having portable miners as requirement for MK2 miners is just so dumb and redundant i cant even...it goes against everything the game is about - automation, why on earth you need to manually craft a bunch of crap just for expanding into more mining nodes.

At least allow stacking those stupid things.
