The miners should be stackable and be able to manufacture in the Assembler for mass production.
So if I go to mine a new area and want to set up 5 mk3 miners, I either need to craft 15 miners on site which is tedious, or give up 15 inventory slots for the trip there which is limiting if I have other constructions to do.
Really? This is your complaint about the game? You have to keep a stack of plates and a stack of rods in your inventory, because that's what you make workbenches, equipment shops, and portable miners with?
You're seriously gonna get mad that you have to make some stuff if you want to make some other stuff... in a game about making stuff that makes stuff?
No. It sounds to me like they find something a bit tedious and would be happy if some of that tedium were reduced via automation or stacking like virtually everything else in the game... in a game about automating making stuff.
The inconvenience of portable miners being an ingredient in automated miners is minor and infrequent, but it is an annoyance to me.
You can automate construction of portable miners, and I would do that, except they don't stack which makes them inconvenient to carry to a new build site.
So I craft them on site with an equipment workshop. Except that means freeing enough inventory space to hold them, and then sitting and watching the craft bench while it makes them (a bit less inconvenient now that you can lock the craft bench/equipment workshop on with spacebar, comapred to when you had to hold left click).
It's the one bit of tedious manual crafting that remains past early game, so to me it feels quite out of place.
There are 369 useful ore nodes in the entire map. At 3 portable miners per Mk 3 Miner, that's a maximum of 1,107 miners to build in a single game, assuming you can even find all the nodes. This costs a total of 2,214 iron plates and 4,428 iron rods.
I've spent more time and materials on "early-game" production lines (10/minute motors springs immediately to mind, as does any reasonably large steel smelting facility), never mind the staggering amount of resources and time it takes to set up a 50 GW fuel power plant a little later.
For that matter, a 50x50 square of concrete platforms costs 5,000 plates and 15,000 bags of concrete, and I've built dozens of those just to put machines on. The material costs for portable miners are, relatively speaking, downright tiny.
There is an alternate recipe which allows you to produce them in a Manufacturer, but it adds 1,107 Motors and 4,428 Steel Pipes and makes them for you at a rate of 1 per minute... which is both slower and much more costly than spending 60-90 seconds building an equipment workshop and making even a dozen miners by hand, on-site, as needed. The only possible use I can see for automated production of portable miners is producing mass quantities of drones.
When you consider the ease with which they are constructed, and the fact that you aren't likely to need more than a handful at a time, this complaint really begins to sound a lot less valid.
It is disappointing that some people feel that "failure to enthusiastically agree with their position" is grounds for attempting to remove someone from the discussion.
I will be withdrawing from this discussion, to avoid any further "disrespectful" outbursts of astonishment.
Letting miners stack is a simple solution for the player. They are classified as equipment, but so are beacons and we can stack those. Treat them like beacons please!
having portable miners as requirement for MK2 miners is just so dumb and redundant i cant even...it goes against everything the game is about - automation, why on earth you need to manually craft a bunch of crap just for expanding into more mining nodes.
At least allow stacking those stupid things.
