Did they actually hit the node and not just outside of the node?
Seems like the only possible issue - unless you've got yourself a bug, of course.
You don't drop the portable miners on the ground from inventory... You just equip them, then go on the node and press the mouse button when you get the text about it's purity. It will work just fine if you do it properly. Actually I'm pretty sure the game doesn't even allow you to place down the miner outside of the node so it's quite literally foolproof.
If you are still convinced you are doing it properly, then drop a screenshot of a few miners you put on a node so people can see what the actual problem looks like.
Not required at all. You can still tap nodes with portable miners even if they are blocked by rocks, resources, miners, foundations, anything. Provided you can get close enough to them.
Guarantee you that the slot number wasn't the problem, but good you've figured it out. Onwards.
