Building factories on water?

I was thinking of building on the "ocean" west of the rocky desert (nice and flat). Do others do this? Also, how far out on the map can you go?

You have to check how far with placing foundations. You can place foundations inside and on top of the water. I love to place factories on water, leaving some space to make a 'river' for water extractors

On the west coast, near grassy area start there is a pinnacle island a ways out and you can could build foundations out to it but the moment you get off the foundation you fall through the map. This was very long ago I tried. And a bit north of this I built foundations out until I ran into a "red zone" immediately start losing health. So the answer is very far.

I put foundations 1m underwater then snap water extractors to them and they work. the foundations give me a easy to align snapping point so everything is perfectly in line with other extractors.

I build coal power plant grid in ocean. Poor visibility of underwater foundation isnt good for building anything else there.
