Also somewhere out there is a post with the locations for nearly 100% coverage using the least number of towers. It was 2 or more years ago when someone mathematically figured out the placement and posted it here somewhere.

The towers clearly don't detect them all ... even when you're literally right next to them ...
I draw the line at doing it 'legit' when I've scoured an area and either missed them or simply didn't detect them.
Not to mention the in game map is absolutely awful. It should absolutely be doing what the Interactive map does, ergo, tracking the locations of nodes you've discovered and crash sites, etc. so you can actually determine what areas you've been over thoroughly and what might have things left to discovered.
I do prefer to go through a zone to begin with, then checking out the map to understand if I missed stuff (stuff being HDDs, Somersloop and Mercers). There's only so thorough you can be.
If they are out of "sight" line they won't show up.
Also... you don't have to... type... ellipses... all the time...
I stood looking at a crash site with my hand scanner saying "no signals in range"...
