No, the OP wants an option to make their character move without holding the W key. Common in MMOs where you do an extensive amount of running.
I am definitely not opposed to this kind of a feature but seriously OP, you shouldn't be straining your fingers on something like this. I've had by fair share of issues with straining fingers, mostly when using controllers for several hours playing fighting games. mashing face buttons for hours at a time makes the ends of your thumbs really sore. However, there should be absolutely no finger strain caused by pressing a button on a keyboard. It's not like you're holding a button for hours at a time.
Based on this I'm guessing this is something that happens to you in other video games too. So my advice is to buy a keyboard that doesn't require you to hurt your fingers to press it's buttons. Unless you have the most delicate fingers I've ever heard about in my life, your keys are probably just too resistant, or may even have a shape or a texture that makes this problem even more pronounced.
What you're describing should definitely not be happening and it's weird that it does. But I guarantee you that if you get a keyboard that has switches with low resistance your problem will disappear.
The option you're looking for is to turn Hold to Sprint to Off in the settings as mentioned, OP.
Your misplaced confidence is funny. There is a difference between auto run and auto sprint. Fenix got it correctly and gave his own solution to the problem.
If you still don't understand what the OP is talking about, here's an example of this feature form another video game: https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Autorun
DaBa even explained it... It's like Holding W or Forward but without touching the keyboard
You press one button and you run (or walk) Forward forever.
I'm using a program that Holds W for me by hitting F6, since the game doesn't have it.
I think running will be the least of your problems in terms of finger acrobatics required to manage a construction site in 3D.
this is one of the weirdiest most ego centric comments i have ever read on steam forums ever - thy name is narcissism
So narcissism is... (checks notes): recommending a real solution to a real problem somebody has.
The older I get the less it takes for the pain to show up.
Like Playing Shooters Like High on Life, I can only do for about an hour before wrist won't let me play, it hurts so much.
Yeah I know all that. And a great solution is getting a keyboard that accommodates that by having low resistance switches. That's what people who type a lot do as well, not just to be able to type even faster but also to lower the strain it causes.
Controllers I am okay with, but keyboards really hurt my hands now. Which sucks because I write software for a living too lol. This game certainly didnt cause the carpel tunnel, but it sure as hell activated the pain like nothing else in my life ever has.
I'd hardly say its dumb.
Ergonomics is a big thing, and some games will have you doing things that make stuff ache quicker than others. Holding W for relatively short periods shouldn't be one of them. If it is, you (they) probably do need to look at your (their) setup.
Autorun would certainly be nice though ><
