Confused about Fuel Production with Refineries
I followed an older Youtube Tutorial to set up my first Oil Refineries to produce Plastic and Heavy Oil which I turn to Oil.
So I have 300m^3 Oil coming in, going to 10 Refineries, each producing Plastic and 10m^3 Heavy Oil.
Apparently the numbers changed since this tutorial was recorded, because he had 3 Refineries producing Fuel. Two refineries use 60m^3 Heavy Oil to output 40m^3 Fuel and the 3rd one he underclocked to 50%. I followed the tutorial without verifying the numbers. Only when I build my second Oil production I noticed this. It has been many hours (at least 12+ hours real time) since I build the first one. I have 5 Power Plants hooked up, each using 20m^3 Fuel per Minute, so 100m^3 but for some weird reason, all my refineries run at 100%. I even set up a 4th one to produce some Smokeless Powder "manually" for my research. After connecting it to the network, it immediately filled with 50m^3 of Heavy Oil residue.

Since I am obviously using more heavy oil residue than I am producing, I was expected for one refinery to run out at some time - but that is not the case. All operate at 100% and all their buffers are filled, however the pipes from the plastic refineries are only half full.

How can this be? Shouldn't it run dry at some point? I watched my fuel consumption and production for several hours yesterday and it was stable. Is it a bug maybe?

Both of those didn't change. Only fuel gen's were buffed and now you need less of them (they burn fuel faster producing more power).

This makes no sense for tutorial, I bet it's actually 5 plastic and 5 rubber refineries, then everything check's out.
Are you sure all your 10 refineries are set to produce plastic?

I bet my left kidney you miscalculated something or did overlook something.

You answered your own question.

Then I don't understand math. I looked at the recipes in game.
10x Plastic produces exactly 100 of heavy oil residue. The recipe create fuel takes in 60 and outputs 40. Each powerplants consumes 20. I don't see how this can work. I am consuming 150 heavy oil residue per minute but only creating 100.

In my second oil refinery I didn't follow the tutorial anymore and only build 2 refineries to produce fuel - still they should use more than it is produced - 120 out 100, putting out 80 fuel per minute to fuel 4 powerplants. This works as well. What am I missing?

You are correct! It is 5 plastic and 5 rubber. This clarifies it! Rubber produces 20 heavy oil residue per minute! I missed that - I thought it is the same as plastic. Thanks a lot!

I have not seen the tutorial, but i would assume they made 10 refineries, 5 making plastic 5 making rubber. resulting in 150 heavy oil residue being made, then making that into 100 fuel.
Makes more sense to make both oil products in a starter factory rather than just one.

Once you have alt recepies then new production chains open up to expand exponentially.

I knew I could safely bet my left kidney.

Rubber makes 20 heavy oil. Change two of your plastic refineries to rubber refineries and the numbers will match up.

I was writing a reply. Then one of them is marked as correct. I think I'm still safe with my right kidney.
