Will I need to start a new save?
If I start playing now, will I need to start a new save when 1.0 releases or will it just continue?

You can continue, but certain changes in recipes and resources might lead to needing to rebuild some parts.

Also, if you want the story elements to proceed as intended, then you will need a fresh file once 1.0 arrives.

You really should start over considering how many changes are coming

Yes, the current save will work, but:

1. Some factories won't work as recipes and resource nodes will change
2. You won't be able to get all achievements unless you start a new save
3. You may not be able to to do the story unless you start a new save

Basically, yes :)

Im going to fix my old saves when 1.0 drops.

For anyone ..
If you start, you are using low level recipes that shouldn't have to be fixed and anyway during progression you'll have to build or fix your factories anyway to take into account new tech like better belts etc

This could be fun, to some degree. Though I suspect your saves are advanced and way more complex than mine, so it might prove to be a challenge.

Record and post to youtube. :) You may find it fun but i think your save would be painful for me if it were mine.

The swamp save will be a pain.

My main save only has 2 factories remaining
1 50GW turbo fuel/ diluted fuel plant
2 A factory that makes everything that I want to store in my storage room (over 40 different items)
And a compact storage room with collectables factory. A very handy all in one base.

In preparation for 1.0 I made a huge tower of power storages storing enough power to trouble shoot in slow motion :)

I'll probably do two saves simultaneously. Maybe I'll run on two servers. A new one so I can do the story, even though I don't care that much, but I'll do it once since it's there. And a recent one that is not very advanced, but it has some basic tiers unlocked, few coal plants in "safe" locations and lots of fairly nice roads an bridges that should be useful. Since I don't care for achievements, this save might work out well.

starting a new game is strongly recommended, too many changes

A little life advice. People have a very hard time letting go. This is an opportunity for all of us to experience letting go of something that doesn't have a high cost. It's a whole new day!

Then, go back, if you wish.

I expect an onslaught of people complaining that their factories are broken, right after 1.0 drops. Most people don't follow the forums and the news and will be caught by surprise. Even now, there have been angry few making demands to keep Update 8 available so they can continue playing their beloved saves,

This always confuses me ^^^^
I don't think I personally have played any EA game that the save has been fully compatible with the full release of the game when the game launched lol usually their are map changes that mess up any base or home or mechanics added/changed within the game that just bork the save.
So i really don't get why players buy an EA title so supporting the dev to finish the game but then complain the dev finishing the game means they have to start over for the best experience lol in the voice of spock "it's not logical captain"

This. It's the perfect opportunity to start over and do it better than before.
