Unlocking the last 12 inventory slots?

Is the wiki right that hard drives can give inventory slots? Is it random luck or am i missing a trick?

Well, we'll have to wait and see how things turn out in 1.0, so any information may be out of date very soon.

But from what I remember the last time I played (which was over 3 years ago at this point), there are 2 sets of 6 inventory slots that become available in Hard Drives when you unlock certain milestones. No clue what they are, but I assume the wiki lists it.
In other words, if you want to give yourself the best chance of getting them (without save scumming), you'll want to minimise how many milestones you complete and MAM stuff you unlock, to reduce the number of available alternative recipes that can appear, giving you the highest chance.
Alternatively, just unlock a ton of stuff until it pops up. More milestones you complete, the more diluted your alt. recipe list will become.

You can get the 1st, at the beginning of the game if you collect 7 hdd and let them scan before unlocking any anything, as there are other 7 alts if you don’t unlock anything.

Do you know when this was added? If it's older, then I simply don't remember getting it because I certainly got more than 7 in earlier playthroughs

There are 6 alt recipes and one inventory slot increase, when you start the game, I have no idea, when they had setup that way, but It was like this since update 6.
If you unlock something, like part assembly or A lot of MAM research, it can add to the pool of items.
So you would want to collect the 7 hdds scan them, before unlocking things. The wiki has what unlocks what.
