Desert is very much like Northern Forest in terms of resource abundance, the only difference is that it's easy to build stuff there, and you might have to do some leg work to find biomass early on.
Also personally I really like it from aesthetics points of view. The contrast between the day and night lighting (hot vs cold vibes) and the vast open spaces make for a very good looking night sky. Also it feels vast and open, forest was always a bit claustrophobic.
