Dedicated Server in 1.0: Better than normal host?
with the release of 1.0 tomorrow I want to play with 7 friends, I saw the possibility of a dedicated server but through the wiki and some topics I saw that there are several bugs, unlike opening the game normally as a host which apparently has no problems.

My question is: Are these bugs that you find on the wiki and the like real? Will 1.0 come with a new dedicated server version with improvements and fixes? In the end, is a dedicated server or a regular host more worth it?

There had been several improvements and love for dedicated servers.... We all have to verify later today but I'm pretty confident.

If you have so many friends to play with, I would recommend a dedicated server.
Reason is that if you self host, you are tied to be present and play (or at least pretend to) every time a friend want to play.

With a dedicated server you can have logged and playing any combination of you and your friends.

Yup. DS is very cool, you can have it running 24/7 without tying up your main PC and anybody can hop on and hop off at any time and the world just runs even if there are no players connected. It is/was indeed very buggy. But yeah, the devs said the DS has been greatly improved.

So if you have several friends it should be the preferred way to go. You can host your own, but you may need more than 16GB of RAM for 8 people. We don't know the requirements yet.

Or you can rent a hosted server. If all eight of you chip in then it may make sense to rent.

In my dedicated setup....
Server is always offline by default..
I've a web page that I can check (and my friend too) that show server status and turn it on....
Turning on it takes about 30 seconds considering everything (provisioning, getting assigned a server, IP, attach disk, turn on, load os, load game...

We play on server then just logout...
Server monitors number of players logged in and if it's zero, will auto shutdown after few minutes

But that's what I find to be the disadvantage of a hosted server. I like my world to be running 24/7 so the production never stops. But it's understandable that they do this to preserve the CPU and RAM resources. It doesn't bother everyone obviously, but for me it matters.

I just repurposed an old rig with a 8700K and 16GB RAM and run the server on that, there is only 2 of us playing but its so much better than the rented one we were using which kept crashing especially when the build got to tier 7 and beyond.

I just run it at home and port forward, it was very easy to setup and its running 24/7, it can be configured to continue the game if zero players are connected but I don't really use that the game basically just gets paused with with zero players on.

I didn't really have any game breaking bugs with a dedicated server except for trucks which we worked around and haven't tested since building my own dedicated server.

Nice thing about this motivating me to build a server is I can run other games on it and apps if needed.

Really hoping their DS will run more stable in 1.0
A few friends and I are already planning to rent a GPortal Server for our Playthrough :D
Just 13-14€ for 10 player slots for 30 days :D

You can share the save file by uploading it somewhere like in a Discord group or any file sharing platform like OneDrive if you are finished playing. If anyone is playing when you want to you can just join them and if not you download the file and start with that. Save file are rather small so internet speed is not a bigger problem than for playing on a Dedicated Server.

The game is balanced in a way this should not be neccessary. Not that you can't or shouldn't use it if you want to but in my opinion you shouldn't have to.
