Sluggish on Ubuntu 24.04.1 [Proton Experimental -or- GE]
I've got decent hardware: Ryzen 7 5800X // RTX 3070
It seems like it's run well enough during experimental but now that 1.0 is out, I've tried Proton Experimental and even GE, but the further I get (and depending on a new patch that downloads every day) the more unplayable it becomes, even on medium graphics settings. Has anyone had success in sorting this out?

Make sure that global illumination setting is off if it isn't already. RT is overall bad on Linux and these new games keep turning it on by default.

What kernel/gpu driver are you on? Running "nvidia-smi" in the terminal should show a gpu driver version.

Try running launch option: VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv %command%
It should disable SAM, the results should be better or worse immediately.

Do you have mangohud/goverlay installed? That frame time chart can be useful when messing with game settings.

Looking at your playtime maybe the game eventually hits a cpu bottle neck but I'm around tier 7 and it's still rock solid 120fps though I am running on a 7950x.

Those are not patches that download everyday. Those are Shader Cache. It has only had on update and that was yesterday. A large one. if is is really small amount and everyday, that is cahce.

Your hardware is beefy enough to brute force shaders. You can try turning it off in steam: settings > downloads > pre-shader caching

What you refer to daily patches are shader cache precalculated by steam.... is a steam thing, look at options in download settings in steam

GPU driver 535.183.01
Launch options greatly improved performance.
No mangohud/goverlay
I'm working on tier 3. My playtime has mostly been in early access.

im on Ubuntu 24.04.1 too, Proton 9.0-3 and 4.6.0 NVIDIA 550.107.02
i set the launch argument -vulkan and it runs smood with 140 -200 fps 1920x1080
resolution game and desktop. global illumination off DLSS off, TAA Ultra settings
Ryzen 7 5800X3D, GeForce RTX 4060, 32GB RAM 4000 MHz, NVME M.2 1TB

my problem is i cant run it in 4k, desktop and game with 3840x2160, it works some time but most of the time it crashes by loading the main menue or loading a save.
when it runs i have 45 - 70 fps

EDIT
after last update random crashes at 1920 x 1080 with vulkan, i switched to Proton Experimental and DX12 and can now play at 4K with 40 to 60 fps ultra settings

GPU driver 535.183.01
555.58.02 works best for UE5
I am having a good time in tandem with kerlen 6.5.0 and the latest proton ge.

Make sure that global illumination setting is off if it isn't already. RT is overall bad on Linux and these new games keep turning it on by default.
That's the amd problem.
RT works perfectly for nvidia with proprietary driver.
Was working well for many years and only getting better.

And also, global illumination ≠ gpu RT.
It's UE5's lumen™ and it falls back to cpu precalculation when it can't do it on a gpu.
Not only that, but in the older version of UE5 (one coffee uses for this game) it didin't support gpu ray traced lights at all.

There wasn't any gpu ray traced reflections either before the very last hotfix.
Now they quietly enabled it and it is working just fine.

disable SAM, the results should be better or worse immediately.
This is not a solution.
The solution is to use a version of the driver that doesn't have problems with it.
Not an option for amd, sadly.
555.58.02 for nvidia on gnu/linux.

You can try turning it off in steam: settings > downloads > pre-shader caching
The worst advice.

Ya know, I am having the same issue on my PC with similar specs.

Hardware:
EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 ULT GAM LHR
Ryzen 9 5900X Vermeer 3.7GHz 12-Core AM4

Most games pre 2022 work just fine with proton. Was able to get through subnautica absolute zero without any issues, then started playing cyberpunk. At first performance was good, but then eventually it would come to a crawl around 20 fps, worse when driving. Finally, I got my hands on Silent Hill 2 which has platinum status on proton DB. Frame rate is always about 20-40, Had to reboot in windows everyime where I regularly had frames above 50.

Maybe the hardware is getting old, but strange to see such a big difference in performance on windows d12 vs proton + vulkan on a platinum title.
