Is it only me or is the map size misleading?
When you scroll around the undiscovered map initially, you get the sense that it must be humongous, but then as you actually explore the perimeter of the usable land (i.e. the island the game takes place on in the middle of the map) it's less than half that area, because everything's surrounded by oceans, and even then, some of the land itself is out of bounds.

It's not "misleading", it's not "half of the land" for sure: you're on an island surrounded by water, I don't want to post spoiler images, but most of the land is available, definitely not just half. It's simply that everything gets smaller as you gain mobility and become familiar with the map. Funny, as many people complain that the everywhere is "too far" in the beginning.

I've added a screenshot to my OP to show what I mean. I mean it's less than half the space that you would think is available if you scroll around the undiscovered map before working out what the actual perimeter is.

It's still pretty big, just disappointing compared to what I thought it would be.

I think it is big. In fact, I don't think any one would make use of more than 75% of the whole land yet. Because they can build vertically, most people prefer to build a big tower or on a land where they are flat (Dune Desert, above the Sea, etc.).

Hmm, I can see your point, though I never felt like that and I played the game for so long that perhaps I have a different perspective.

Not to speculate here, but maybe because there are not hard 'borders' around the map, can mean that they do have plans to expand the map with new areas in the future. But I think the map is big enough for what you need to do and no need for a bigger map to finish the game

Yeah, I'm thinking the same: there is room for more land. So while the devs said repeatedly "no plans for a new map", they never said they won't be any expansions and clearly indicated that DLC will be coming, so... who knows?

One word: Foundations.

Just make more land yourself.
TH3R4BB!T Oct 13, 2024 @ 5:09am
Foundations don't make the map bigger, also there are death barriers around the map. But I take it you meant it sarcastic.

One think I never fully understand is why the devs never planned for making nodes only spawn in some areas. So: Red Forrest only has Quarts, Titan Forest only has Bauxite, Uranium only in Swamps..... So that you are kind of forced to explore those areas, and transport. Probably it also would make it 'too hard'

It wasn't. OP is complaining about usable land and with foundations you can make more usable land.

Not exactly, I was "complaining" (more like an observation) that the amount the map lets you scroll around makes it look bigger than it actually is.

The buildable area (solid ground only) is approx. 27 km². If that's not enough for you, nobody can help you. And the reason for it looks bigger as it is: The map view is a rectangle, the area with solid ground isn't.

I feel like people are deliberately missing the point of my post. I'm not saying I haven't got enough space to build. I'm saying when you start off with the map all black, it looks positively huge, and you can scroll the map for a fair way each direction. You think it will take you a 1000 hours to uncover all of it.

But once you've explored most it it, turns out that the amount of it that you can actually use (excluding surrounding oceans and insta-death boundaries) is a lot less.

To put it in blunt terms (for purposes of explaining my point) it feels a bit bait and switchy.

Ah, yes, you can indeed scroll a lot up and down and left to right in blackness. Maybe make it a point on the QA site that the map 'scrolls beyond the boundaries and needs to scroll less'. Also, add that there needs to be hard lines to identify the boundaries instead of it being visible only when exploring into that direction

I had a similar moment where I noticed that I the playable area of the map within the death barrier seemed very small in comparison to the scroll limit of the map view, if that makes sense. I don't think there was any intent behind it besides this being an overlooked detail unless they purposefully left it this way in order to have room for future additional content.

There are a lot of rough edges in this game and this probably just one of them.

your pic only shows the top of the map at north coast, still have east/west and south of the map to open up...
