Just like real life, your house is connected to the lines that run thru your neighborhood not directly to a power station.
EDIT: for clarity....pick any existing power pole, bring a line out with you to the coal plants. they will all work together.
from there you need to feed coal to the generators in order to have them start producing. i suggest to hook up the extractors to the Biomass Burners to fill all your water pipes prior feeding them coal and hooking them up to the power grid. get them stable before putting them under load.
So what you're looking at with the mk 1 poles is having 2 machines connected to a power pole and that power pole connects to 2 other power poles. You can transfer any amount of power through a power line.
While you got your answer, I'm going to echo this as well for a different reason. If you focus on building off of a line of connected power poles, you can save yourself some trouble later if you accidentally consume too much power.
Instead of not being able to do anything until you find a way to generate more power, you'd have the option to disconnect the wire/pole leading to a smaller section to allow everything else to run. This is great when you're far from the power generators when the power goes out.
2. then you build coal generators and provide them with coal and water
3. once coal generators started to generate power you connect them to your power network
4. at this point you can remove biomass generators, or leave them as backup
