In my case, for the recipes early on, I've decided to just duplicate hard drives. I've already done the exploring and found almost all of them during my first play through to completing the game and saving the day.
I really enjoyed exploring in this game. I found so many interesting locations while Sphere and Sloop hunting that I just had never seen before even though I've been playing since initial launch on EGS.
Whoever designed the map really took their time making some of the locations. It's hard to pinpoint my favourite spot, but a top contender would have to be a spot that had red bamboo and two small streams flowing down a hill in a spiral. At the top of the hill was a Sphere.
Now is more about me doing my own goals than the game setting them
Like.... Building a factory for 50 thermal propulsion rocket
But in the end, as you said, after last elevator it is kinda up to you to set goals.
Maybe try a modded playtrough? That's on my long term to do list at least.
After I am finished updating my old saves to 1.0 recipes, that's been a journey so far :P
Like most games of similar genre, people usually set their own goals and continue to make it more efficient and build more :)
But you got 300 hours out of it for like what? $40? That is pretty good entertainment (my assumption of comparing to going out of date for 2 movie + snacks)
Or a nice place for dinner for 2 or 1 (really fancy place)
Now if you complete in 30 hours of play in vanilla (standard game), then yea... it might be limited.
But there are a couple of things to think about.
It is a sandbox game.
So it is only limited to you.
The tiers and Mercer sphere story is more like a guide to get you into the game (stage by stage in construction) OR you could have skipped all that and unlocked everything (change gameplay but no achievement)
that is the beauty of a sandbox. You make what you will.
But at the end of the day, to each their own, maybe sandbox is not your jam (which is ok. You did buy and play, so kudos for that)
Just keep in mind that many sandboxes follow a similar formula so that is a good take away :)
Oh and I suppose Rocket Fuel too.
Now if you've done that - well congrats - but generally most never touch it - cause its "too hard" :P
There's some interesting challenges out there that people skip...plenty to do.
The main point of the game isn't the campaign/milestones - but the experience and building - it IS a factory game afterall.
But its entirely up to you.
