I am worried about missing an op alt recipe because of poor decision, can you have all alt recipe with the hard drives?

There are more hard drives in the game than alt recipes and turns out you can eventually buy them from the awesome shop end game wise so you got nothing to worry about.

Simply mam will tell you you that no further research is available.... And no hd is used

Inventory slot bonus occasionally shows up - when that runs out - and there's nothing else left? (as I'm not sure if there's any other hidden surprises) It should drop it back in your inventory.

Attempting to scan a hard drive when there are no recipes it can unlock will simply say that, that there is no recipes, and the drive isn't used. Potential alt recipes unlock based on your game progress (alternate steel recipes only become available once you research steel production, etc.), so depending on how early you start scanning, how many you scan, and how many scans you leave banked in the library, this can happen at any point in the game.

Be warned that you may reach status of all research done even if not researched every alternate ..
As you can research only up to your tier. So if you are at low tier and do many research you can end up with all research done

Keep HD remaining for later and try again as you unlock more tiers

Yeah forgot to mention this - alt recipes may not be available right away - so stash the drives and re-scan when you progress - should this happen.

There is (was?) a bug where if there's only one alt left it will also say that there are no rewards. If that bug is still present, save and then reload your game. That should fix it.

There are enough drives to go around.
If you see 2 trash recipes, leave it there. Hard drive recipes are like a deck of cards. If there are recipes on the table, you can't draw them again. The next draw will be more likely to have what you're looking for.

Yes, you can collect are drives and research then until you get your desired outcome

It is also worth mentioning that the rescan ability can actually be really strong because the result is random. This means that if you are looking for a very specific recipe like the easy plutonium fuel rod then you can save up a bunch of drives and save and load until you find the recipe you need. The random seed for them isn't saved so the you will get different results each time. This is a godsend when trying to get certain very specific nuclear recipes into decent sized production.
