Exploring "fog of war"
Can someone explain to me how the "fog of war"(black-map) works? I know that there are radio towers that reveal a certain radius after some time. However, I have some areas on my map that were partly uncovered without a radio tower and others where I explored remained black.. My guess is that it is related to built structures.. can anyone confirm that?
here is a screenshot from my map -> https://ibb.co/SKCV1DS
btw.. sorry for my bad english..

You need line of sight to the highest piece of ground in a given map coordinate to uncover it, meaning you need to be at that elevation or higher for those cliffs.

I can't explain why you don't have the grasslands uncovered, though. Clearly you have been to those locations because of the beacons. Did you have a recent death/character reset? Or have you been there before update 5 came out and not been back since?

ah i see, ok so the fog of war sometime requires you to actually reach the elevation of the surrounding terrain in order to uncover that part of the map even if you have walk around it. alternately you lift the fog of war while travelling though caves, which sounds a bit goofy since you aren't actually at the elevation of the surface but under it. what look to me like you have travelled though a canyon, well in that area you will need to start ascending to the upper portions of the area in order to uncover more.

sorry if that didn't make decent sense, the map can be finicky in certain areas of the map sometimes.

edit: i'm also assuming you aren't using radio towers yet, as Bossman stated they are best utilised if you place them at the highest point with the most clear line of sight 360 degrees. so if you place any towers at ground level they won't reveal very much.

I started with update 5, i died a few times on my explorations but i always collect my crate.
The fog of war system sounds really strange..
so i need to build a 100 fundation high with a radio tower? really dumb system.. but thanks for the explanation.

yeah, get them to the highest elevation you can. build a tower to place them on if need be. be sure they clear any obstruction of view in the immediate area and they should reach further.

Is the gound of the radiotower important or the top?

dumb? not really, for example, FM radio waves DO NOT penetrate anything in their way, hence why we have those real life 100 foot radio towers :)

btw way it ONLY needs to clear the immediate area not everything on the map :)

lol, just go mess around with them. maybe experimenting with them will help you understand better, describing their mechanics is a little harder than you might think lol. again, clear line of sight is paramount, and honestly i'm not really sure if having only the top peaking up would pass as i've always just put them as high as i felt was necessary.
