Signs and symbols

I was just fooling around with signs and tried a few symbols like the double arrow in

I understood that you can use charmap or an unicode table to find and try other symbols, but many of them will not work and give a question mark. So I tried the forum for symbols, ascii, unicode and the likes but can't find an answer to which symbols are accessible in the game and which are not. So has anyone figured a way to know before trying if something will work or not?
