motion Sickness issues
Hello
I have just bought Satisfactory because it was recommended to me by friends. As I suffer from motion sickness (simulation sickness), I looked on the Internet beforehand to see whether screen shakes, head bobbing etc. can be deactivated in the options. Yes it is - great. So I bought it, installed it and took the first steps. The fact that everything shakes during the landing process is negligible, as I can close my eyes. But as with so many games. Yes, you can deactivate screen shakes and also headbobbing while walking. But when you're mining resources, using your weapon or other abilities, the whole screen shakes and the natural movement is simulated. This immediately makes me feel dizzy and nauseous. In bad cases, I get a headache and vomit.
The problem with motion sickness is that the brain can't process movements that you don't perform yourself. So all additional camera movements that are not carried out by myself via command cause this illness.
It would be great if you could add an option to disable these animations. I don't need immersion or haptic feedback. Unfortunately I need games like early 2000 to be able to play them at all. And motion sickness affects many players. As a streamer, I have met many fellow sufferers.
If you want to know more, I'm happy to help.
Best regards from Vienna

Have read half of your post (second part with explanation of motion/simulation sickness is already well known by me.

First think I want to say...
That kind of sickness is very personal. No question about it ..

I never mind if a game has (like satisfactory) some shaking during introduction as introduction is one time event... And like you say... You can always look elsewhere and just glimpse at screen to have an idea of what's happening.
Also, for me, I don't get sick if movement is very limited in time.... And with occasional events.

About mining, consider that you use manual mining just few times at beginning.... You will always prefer miners that automate everything.

What could help you is to try experimenting with FOV setting if you already hadn't...
This can help a lot usually.

For me, nothing that I never had issues with this game because you have your hand/tools shown on screen. Having something on screen centered and always on prime view is of great help in such cases.

When you say about games pre-2k isn't true.... Try to play Wolfenstein 3d and you'll get sick in no time even if there's no shaking.

My personal suggestion is (if you already hadn't tried)
- play around FOV (usually bigger number than default, try increment of 10 and then adjust)
- monitor size and distance also can have an impact... If you can do some tests...

Don't know if those advices and comments will resolve ..

As said before .. it's very personal and despite we both suffer same sickness, solutions can vary a lot.

Personally I had resolved with FOV and now I've over 800 hours of play

Jack has already covered how hand-mining can quickly be replaced with personal miners / automated miners. Will also add, you mentioned about "using your weapon" being a potential trigger, might be worth turning creature aggression off in the Advanced Game Settings, thus remove the need to ever brandish / use a weapon (might still be able to murder critters if so inclined via vehicular slaughter).

I'm sorry you're experiencing that, it must really suck. If able, perhaps see if a curved monitor can help (along with the other suggestions)? Those help me stay comfortable for longer periods, but of course it could be totally different for you. I hope you find a solution that works for you, it's a great game. :espresso:

I'm sorry to hear about your discomfort. I've read that putting a light behind the monitor, like gluing a LED strip along the back edges of the monitor, or even just a lamp, can help some reduce motion sickness while playing games. The light should be warm and about the same power/level than the monitor screen and diffused, otherwise it may be bad for your eyesight. Though I have absolutely no idea if that is true, but perhaps ask around?

Just adding a comment with a question if you want to answer as might be personal ...

Do you use corrective lens (glasses or contact lens)

Depending on eye and lens correction, it can enhance simulation sickness. Not that you can do much of it's the case. Better see what you have on front of you than seeing vague colours and lights...

Anyway I had asked my optician and she told me that depending on correction type and amount.. the lens can already have distortions that after a few days your brain understand as lines and not curved.
Such straight lines that tend to be curved depend also on location (center of vision or border) and if such line is in proximity or distant.

Fact is that in a simulation you see a screen that is near and represent object that can be far. So the brain is tricked to see something in theory distant but rendered near and seen at half a meter away from you.

Another question... Not related with satisfactory....

Have you ever tried Minecraft?
If not, have ever seen someone playing it?

I ask that because I get sick in less than 2 minutes... Even seeing a video in a small window

Sorry for my late respons.
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I am now 42 years old and i played many games in my life. Also Wolfestein 3D have no problem with it. In my case it´s really the self moving camera like Shakes or "Camera Smoothing" in 2D games wenn you move - stop and the camera moves slightly after stoping to center on the character. So FOV is a good help sometimes and sometimes not.
What settings do you use Jack to play Satisfactory?

Minecraft no problem - i found Settings to play hundred of hours. Rust - no problem, Ark was the most time no problem but with one Update the changed something and i cant play it anymore. I also cant put my finger on it.

I am 66 and none of the things above really help. FOV never helps and has nothing to do with screen shake.

Having Indirect lighting helps to prevent my eyes to get tired. Getting new glasses designed specifically for close view and monitors also helps to prevent eyes getting tired.

The only thing that will help is to completely stop the screen shake.

This has been discussed for years, and the Developers continue to ignore the complaint. They Don't care!

I just started playing Satisfactory. I've put it off because I do get sick after watching people play online. I can go for a while but eventually it happens. I don't really play 1st person games because of my motion sickness although I have played Astro Colony and I can go hours on that.

So far, got a terrible motion sickness headache and stomach ache after 2 hours of Satisfactory on default settings. Just started looking around for solutions and found some that I hope will help out. I really wish Satisfactory was more like Captain of Industry as far as being able to step back, view, and navigate. But I can understand how it doesn't make sense for them to spend time/money on a feature that won't boost their profit enough to make it worthwhile. Maybe if their sales drop enough so they have to start appealing to the players who get motion sickness in order to boost sales. lol

Anyway, hoping to try the config changes and mod over the next few days. Thanks for the suggestions and mod!

Just to follow up in case anyone cares, I found a solution. I tried the 3rd person mod and it didn't really help because I had trouble interacting with things and would constantly have to turn it off and on. The changes in settings did help a little. But the greatest help was the flight mode setting that you have to set BEFORE you start a new game. It's under advanced settings. Just search for flight mode and you should find out how to do it. It's PERFECT! Again, you have to turn it on BEFORE you start a game. No more motion sickness headaches!

You can turn on AGS anytime.

If you load a savegame you have in the bottom right corner the option: "enable advanced game settings".

As someone who does indeed get motion sickness, that is a... pretty insane reaction to this game specifically. You might need a doctor, I'm not sure the game is the issue.

This game only gives me surreal motion sickness. Half life 2 maybe did a little. I haven't had issues otherwise. I'll try the flying mode now too.

Yeah, I keep hoping that one of these days it'll be a standard accessibility feature for games to include a "head bob intensity" slider which you can set all the way down to 0 if needed. It seems like just a a little thing, but it makes a big difference to some folks.

I get vertigo really bad, and some games like Half Life 2, MechWarrior 5, and Mirror's Edge are practically impossible for me. Other games like this one and MSFS don't bother me hardly at all. Well, there was the one time my tail rotor failed in a MSFS helicopter, that made me pretty sick for a while.

I realize this is an old thread, but it's not a new problem and some people who are like me get vertigo as they age out. Depending on the type of vertigo, ie BPV, some medication and physiotherapy helps! But it's possible to get "gamer's" vertigo from playing a game that triggers you.

My advice:

Set your screen resolution to something truly wide, so you get that letterboxing effect. Get Lossless Scaling to help do that, if you need it.

As well, if you can set a wide POV, that can help.

Put a dot of masking tape in the middle of your screen.

Keep your room lights bright and sit as far away from your screen as you can.
