Smart Splitters
OK so I got the Smart splitter unlocked and had a question.

So I have a bunch of storage units lined up side by side and I plan to sort materials into each. So I have my first splitter lined up in from of chest one lets just say this will have Screws in it for sake of argument. So I assume the one going into that chest I set as screws to limit it to just screws.

Then the left has nothing and on the right I assume I set that to ANY UNDEFINED meaning all other items will be sorted to the right at which point the next chest would be say IRON RODS into that chest and in this case going forward would be any undefined to move the items along?

So am I understanding the set up right?

Also is there any way to sort 2 items into the same chest using just the one smart splitter where I could say move screws and rods into the same chest and move other items along to the next chest or is it pretty much one item per instruction?

I think you got the right idea.
As for your last point, sorting 2 or more items down one lane, can be done with Programable Splitters, later on down the Caterium research tree

So it sounds like you have a sushi belt (mixed items on one belt) that you want to sort into containers.

You are mostly correct.

Belt feeds into a smart splitter. You need to use all 3 outputs:
* Output 1, Screws, to screws container.
* Output 2, Overflow, to Awesome Sink
* Output 3, Any Undefined, sends every item other than Screws to the next smart splitter.

You need the overflow to a sink beause if the screws container fills up, it will jam the whole line.

As to being able to split multiple items into the same container. You could use multiple splitters to split off each item type, then merge them into a single container.
I think the Programmable Splitter lets you filter multiplenl items on one output, but I have never tried it.

One output for a specific thing, the second is an overflow to the next splitter. This will also prevent the conveyor from getting stuck when the container is full. You can put awesome sink at the end of the line for unused items.
For two items, you can use two outputs of the splitter and the third for overflow. But storing different things in one container is bad for automation. You can't get specific items u need automatically.

Yep, Here's a Screenshot of my Blueprint, with two smart Splitters going into a pair Industrial Containers per item. Left output Being set to Overflow going to the Mergers which I either send to a sink or and overflow Buffer container.

Where would the sink be placed on the out chute of the screw chest or prior to the next smart splitter?

OK thats sort of what I was thinking just not got it unlocked yet but getting close as it is visible in MAM being the items I have already unlocked exposed it in the tree

The sink needs to be connected to the Overflow output of each smart splitter

Just use 2 outputs and overflow instead of Any Undefined. So u need connect only last splitter to the sink.

OK let me try and get this straight so you have a in chute lets call that 'A'. Then you have 3 Out Chutes '1', '2', '3',

1 goes no where has no connection. That would be the left chute. Center chutes exits out into the first chest. Chute '3' I assume this gets connected to the sink and then the sink exits out to the next smart splitters intake???

this sounds maybe more what I am looking for but not understanding the set up. I assume the first smart splitter would be set for the item lets just say screws. The left chute would be empty the center would be screws and the right would go to the next splitter but where would this second splitter set to over flow be placed in this chain?

I really don't understand why simple things should be made complicated. Here is the right exit to the container, middle overflow and sink in the end. But if you are sorting more things than the conveyor's capacity, then yes it is more difficult.

AH OK now I think I know what you mean and sorry it's late here and been doing this all day am beat HA AH

So first splitter goes to screws chest and then the off chute to the next chest is set to OVERFLOW I assume this will mean if the screws are full it will just goto the next splitter and on until it reaches the sink. Splitter 2 would do the same thing splitter off say rods to chest 2 and over flow the rest to the end of the train as it were.

So items would come to the 1st smart splitter, sort screws into the 1st container, if that container overflows the screws goto the mergers then the sink
Any undefined lets anything not screws to the next smart splitter for sorting down the line.

Absolutely right, this setup allows you to sort one conveyor into which you merge all items. The only negative is the throughput speed of the conveyor.
