how to i actually use coal miners for power?
the title really says it all, i have no clue on how im sopposed to use coal miners and actually get the power to my factory, the one way to connect power to it is used up by the biomass generator i had to connect to it...

You generally shouldn't connect one building directly to another with power lines. Instead, connect each building to a power pole, which allows multiple connections (up to 4 connections for the Mk1). Create a web of power poles connected together, and eventually you can chain everything to everything else.

You can have a bunch of power generators and a bunch of power consumers all connected on the same grid, and then the power will just go wherever it needs to go along those wires (as long as you have enough total power for everything).

I find it's a good practice to connect only 1 actual building per power pole, and reserve the other 3 connection slots for more power poles. So I typically place a power pole right next to every building that consumes or produces power, and then worry about connecting the poles, rather than trying to connect a building directly to anything else.

UI tip: If you start building a power line, and connect one end to something, then just look at the ground while you are choosing where to connect the other end, the game will automatically make a power pole for you to connect to.

Also, as others have noted, a coal MINER does not produce power directly. It produces coal. You then need to burn that coal in a coal GENERATOR (also requires water) in order to produce electricity.

There are coal generators you have to research.

They require coal and water.

I have no idea how far you are so I explain most of it.

1st you have to get to Phase 2
That Means
Make the Space Elevator
Make the 50 Smart Plating
Load and launch the Smart Plating via the space elevator

The 1st Tier 3 Milestone in the Hub is Coal Generators, Make what you need to complete this milestone.
now you are going to want
a miner on a coal node
a Water Extractor in a body of water
Belts running to the Coal gen with coal
Pipes running water to the coal gen (it's a steam generator after all)

First things first, going off this description, use power poles to make a power grid, these allow multiple connections each pole. Going direct from biomass to a production/extraction building will mean you can't connect anything else to it.

Then you can connect multiple biomass burners to multiple extractors, to multiple generators, to multiple more poles, to mult.. you get the idea.

Its not the miner that gives the power - the coal miner supplies a coal power generator - that supplies 75MW of power (without power shards).

Note a 240pm coal miner will feed 16 generators (15 coal per minute for each). However, the generator needs water too - at 45m3 per minute. So you need water extractors too, which give out 120m3 per minute in total (at 100%) speed. Note also you need water pipes which have a max load of 300 - so thats three extractors per pipe (roughly)

Look up a template for coal plant on google or follow a YouTube to see how to tie these things together

Ok typically I run power poles from the miner and water extractor to the coal gen, then use biomass burners power the miner and water extractors long enough for the coal gen to start producing power, then I run the power line with poles to my factory.

You don't.

A miner is for mining, not for power generation. That's what power generators are supposed to do.

How did you get the idea, that a power consumer can provide power? ;)
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Just run a long azz power line all the way to where you need it.

I always had all my power connected. I guess some people manage it another way but that worked for me.

Oh and if you can already, build and plan big. You will need more power quite fast.

Make sure you pick a nice spot where you can expand, or just build big early so you dont need to bother with power, ... at least for a while :D

typically you have to jump start larger power plants. the game has this chicken and egg situation where you need power to run the water pump and coal extractor but your coal plant cant make power without those inputs and the inputs cant run without power. If your are just starting out in your world network the coal extractor, water pump, and coal power plant together and off of one power pole to the side run out like 3 bio reactors. Throw just enough biofule into the bio reactors to get the power plant inputs charged then the coal plant should take over. Side note in early stages it is important that you get a stack of batteries and some breaker switches going so you can do this process again if you ever f up and blow your grid.

The root issue here is the OP doesn't know how a steam generator produces electricity.

As was stated by others. The coal is the fuel that is ignited in the generator. The heat produced turns the water that is fed in; into steam. The steam then turns the vanes on a turbine that turns inside a magnetic field inside the generator producing electricity. The Atomic reactor further along does it the same way,

I am going to try and resume everything in the best way possible.
As said before, the miner doesnt generate electricity, it produces coal. A Coal generator produces electrivity. To do so, it requires Coal / Petroleum coke (but it's a bad idea to use the latter trust me ; gave me lots of headaches) and water. Water can be produced by Liquid extractors intalled on top of a lake OR the END-OF-MAP sea. If the issue is that you can't make it so that water is fed to the generator, water pumps exist wich for 5MW can make the water go up 25 meters more for Tier 1 or 50/75m for Tier 2/3. If the generator works, all you've gotta do is CABLE MANAGEMENT connect the generator with cables to a power pole (tier 1 ; 4 connections, tier 2 ; 7 connections, tier 3 ; 10 connections) and you just keep placing cables and poles until it is connected to your main Power Grid. (basically a net of cables and poles connecting all your machinery with all your generators.)

Edit : if i missed anything feel free to post the 13th comment on this post
Edit 2 : But seriously, if you are not using poles what the hell are you doing ?? Connecting something else than a pole to a generator is a terrible idea because it artificaially restricts the amount of machines that you can have active at the same time ; instead of 3 being connected to a generator (single pole) you make it so that only 1 is connected.
WHY ????

1) Put some coal generators;
2) Put some miners and water extractors and connect them to your coal generators;
3) Connect everything to your current power grid so that miners and water extractors can start feeding coal generators so that they can start producing power.
