The one thing I can fully recommend (and wish I had done much earlier) is adding more pocket slots, so you can concentrate much more on the actual game.
For this you do not need a mod, you just upload your savegame to SCIM, edit your pocket slots and download the savegame to your computer.

Since it is not a mod you can you can still invite friend if you should decide to go public. Also you don't need to worry about updates breaking it.
There is also a high-speed Conveyor Belt Mk6 mod that solves the the issue of 1200 ppm Miner Mk3 output (though 1.0 should have a solution for this) it comes with belt counter and limiter too (like a valve for belts) so you can see the real time throughput of a belt and set precise throughput limits for belts. This belt is expensive but it's great for "backbones" that have to carry high throughput.

There is also a mod for those tired with the frustrating aluminum waste water management that simply sinks any liquids: Just Sink. I finally gave in and started using this mod until they fix this somehow. I had two refineries producing 300 m3 of water each, yet they suddenly started filling a tank at 900 m3, it shouldn't even be possible since pipes carry only 600 m3. The factory kept shutting down, I just could not get rid of the water by the usual ways of looping it back into production. It worked for me so far, so probably just a bug but I was too frustrated this time, I didn't want to rebuild.
Oh yeah, they can get annoying after a while.

SirDigby's mods are my favorite mods. Alternative research, map markers for crash sites, daisy chain everything etc i use. been a year since i played though waiting for 1.0 so I'm not sure if they're all functional you'll have to look in the mod manager what their status is if you decide to use any.
