When you die and start ro ragdoll, your lifeless corpse will happily fall through the terrain to eternity and the crate ends up not at the place of death but at the point where you stop watching the surprisingly lively corpse dance.
reload an older save just before death
(My Autosave is 5 minutes, so I always reload on death, just so I don't have to deal with reclaiming the crate)
SCIM it to you.
Go to "interactive map", then to the right you can upload your save file. After that's done you can change whatever (remove crates and put items in your characters inventory, for example) then download the new savefile and load that one in the game.
If you install the Organized Crates mod (via Satisfactory Mod Manager via Ficsit.app), it will pick up every black crate on the map that was dropped by either disassembly (when your inventory is full) or death. It then returns the items to the Unique Crate Organizer, the mod's catch-all chest.
I use this primarily to help me pick up crates after knocking down outdated factories, but it does work in the event that you die. Hope this helps!
