trains, to many wagons? weight? locomotives?
Going to build a track around the map in one gigantic cirle to ship resources into a megafactory, going to build a bunch of smaller factories close to resource nodes so priority is wires, cables, ai limiter, heavy frame, reinforced iron plate, modular frame, steel, encased industrial beam and such but i also want to ship whats left of iron, copper and other low level resources.
Last time i did this i had 7 trains with 6 or 7 cargo wagons and despite using belts capable of shifting 1500 items/m i still struggled with off loading the trains.

So i want to use longer trains so have a few questions.

1/ if i put 2 locomotives at the beginning will both of them help to pull everything around?
2/ if i put 1 locomotive at both ends, will both of them help to pull everything around?
3/ is it feasible to use train sets with 15 cargo wagons or is it to heavy?

Regards

I think it's one train to every 4 wagons, so yes, two trains will pull 8 wagons. If I'm correct you would then need 4 trains for 15 wagons. There are a few videos out there explaining it in more detail than I can. I don't think the configuration matters, other than affecting your station/terminal layout.

Ok, question on trains? I know they have to be on a flat track. So how do you get them to all the different locations? Build it meters up in the air?? Just wondering, right now I'm using a lot of drones, but those eat batteries.

Trains can go up tier 1 or 2 ramps. Generally speaking, my experience is the 1 train to 4 wagons rule is adequate. However, dont stop a train on a slope, it can cause issues. If you do, you need more trains per wagon. It doesnt matter where the trains are in the series except you need one in front. I've done 20+ wagon trains before. That was more for establishing major bases than transporting materials for processing though.

You can incline the track but you need to use the 1 or 2m slopes.

I have 10 trains with 74 cars each train that goes on a circumnavigational route. All trains have only 1 locomotive. If you want to build a hill for something like that, it takes 1 zoop (10 foundations) and up 1 regular foundation on the 10th. With this grade, the 74 car long train can actually stop at a block station, and get going again on its own.
Each station is just over 1km long.

Dont need to be flat at all, in my last playthrough i had one station at the bottom of the desert and then the track went west over the mountain but do note, the track was flat the first couple of sections from the station so it had time to make speed.

trains accelerate slowly so after stations and stop signals i prefer to build a flat portion so a train can make some speed before hitting an incline.

Does what the wagon is loaded with effect locomotive performance? ie, wagons full of iron ingots verses say wire or something light, different acceleration / braking / slope can climb?

I dont think so. But there is a difference between a loaded wagon and not loaded wagon.

been thinking about it for a while, the possibility to run +50 wagons in one train set opens up new alternatives.

Was thinking of producing low and mid tier items in a decentralized manner and mid tier to high tier items centralized.
Think i will try something new and go for a more decentralized manufacturing even for high tier items.

I think it's a great idea, and it will be fun!

Yes it affects performance greatly from an empty train to a full one. Not sure if different products have their own weights though.

Ok, thanks for all the answers...I was wanting some info before I invested in redoing my entire base. Appreciate it.

You can go steeper by placing a ramp, then placing the track down on an angle with the ramp, then delete the ramp.

Trains need buffers on both ends so that you have throughput even when the freight car is loading or unloading.

You can meet belt efficiency if your freight storage doesn't deplete before the train comes back. If it does deplete, then add a second car for that resource.

I build mostly high for my tracks so I can ignore terrain.
