Route planning on the map
One feature I would very much like to see is the ability to draw a route on the map, and have it appear in the world like autopilot routes. Among other things, this would make it much easier to plan railways.

What I used to do was park a vehicle at a destination, then walk back and start laying track in the direction of the vehicle. Surveying the route was one of the best mid-game challenges, before passive mode. Similar with long conveyors.

The map isn't great at showing terrain obstacles and elevation.
Similar approach to nfgman, however rather than a vehicle I use a map marker and set that marker to highlight -- gives an in-gameworld 'beam of light' visible from quite a long way to use as a guide of where heading towards (plus the icon on the compass).
I was also trying to found the best way to build road and such, and then as my experience growth during play, I definitly switch my mind, I think that game in "3 dimenson" you can build flat on ground, but do remember you can also build high, and at some point you can build road at a convenient height were there's almost no obstacle and you can build straight! :p The blueprint designer is your friend! play with it to create shape that make 4x4 road :) google it as I did too get some great example from player around. Your own *Satisfaction* will raise to 300% when you will lay down your first highway as I did ahahahah :)

The World-map really should be 3D and fully rotateble as well as some way of marking out stuff on the map that you can also see in game then.

And no, Markers are NO solution for that. They are limited in number and take a rather long time to set up in comparison to just drawing a line on the map.
(and i already hate how limited the map is cause i like to mark the resource-types on the map but there are no icons for the various ores).

I think that looks soooo ugly. We had that on our last sever and it was just hideous seeing all those straight foundation-lines in the air.

Right now i have it in 3 places only. 2 are just temporary conveyor-lines for my coal-power and the last is a large platform on top of the sea for ficsmas. The Coal-lines came cause i had to upgrade power for all the ficsmas machines.

This would be outstanding -- being able to see the topography in this way would increase its value tremendously for planning out routes.
