Walls flickering.
I had serious FPS problems and doing tests on small scales, I realized that by covering machinery and conveyor belts with walls, I gained FPS.
Well, it got a little out of hand and I covered a gigantic three-story factory, all with walls.
I have gone from 25-35 FPS to +60.

The problem is that now, depending on the angle I look at, the walls start flashing like crazy. It's super uncomfortable and only happens with walls.

Is there anything I can do to stop the walls from flickering?

I haven't noticed walls flickering. Do you have a video you can share of the behavior?

Also, have you cleanly updated your video drivers recently?

Here is a video (CAUTION, FLICKERING) https://youtu.be/4l7EU3PpvMA

With "Hierarchical Z-Buffer Occlusion" enabled there is no flickering. Although it looks weird when I have a gun in my hands or move the camera quickly.

I don't know, I'll check that I have everything updated and such, but I don't think that's the problem. Thanks for the interest and help.

Oh, wow. Ya, that's horrible.
What is your draw distance set at? Are all of your settings maxed out?

Other people have the same issue. Weird how adding MORE objects actually increases FPS.

The game for me is memory bound.

What I'm seeing is when FPS drops it is hitting the CPU memory subsystem hard.

The game is also really sensitive to CPU/RAM hardware errors.

Basically I think its the animations en-masse. Like fuel generators are terrible because of the piston animation.

R5 5600, 32GB DDR4 3200 CL16, RX 6650 XT

Get around 90 FPS high settings even in a big factory.

Get around 30-40 FPS when I look at my fuel generators in the middle of the map from any distance (Around 90GW of diluted fuel from a single fracking node)

Its not terrible its just that my CPU usage remains around 5-9% and GPU usage actually drops from 100% to 60-70%.

From what I can tell the game likes fast ram, and lots of it. The game seems to be mostly hindered based on the CPU/Memory interface. Lots of cache misses go to RAM.

The hierarchical Z-buffer occlusion fixed the issue for me. I haven't noticed any weirdness in any other areas caused by this setting personally.

Z-buffer occlusion fixed it for me as well.

Well, hello again a year later. This doesn't happen to me anymore. Something I didn't mention is that this problem occurred to me playing on Linux (Ubuntu)... to avoid the typical comments of "But you play on Linux, that must be the problem."
Today I still play on Linux (Manjaro) and it doesn't happen. Either the game or Vulkan has improved since then and it doesn't happen anymore.

Nowadays I still cover things (most of them) to gain FPS: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3368962108

Yes it was an issue in early access, I had it with foundations though as I used it for walls.
It seems to have been fixed for 1.0, although I haven't built at the same scale as in my EA playthrough yet

I'm playing full release 1.0, CL#383233 (1.0.1.1), on Windows, DX12, and this still occurs.
Enabling Hierarchical Z-Buffer Occlusion did resolve the issue :-) And I see no performance hit (FPS wise) so far.

In my case, this happens when I have a LOT of walls too (I'm building a very large resource hub, over the void north of the Dune Desert, sandwiched between the desert and the world border, where I gather all the resource on the map to a single place, to re-distribute it to the different factory, via trains, so you can imagine how big this place is :steamhappy:).

I get these invisible walls sometimes when I hover my customising tool over them, like if I'm about to change a wall to concrete or metal, it'll just disappear. Sometimes I have to rebuild them. Had this bug since day one. Never seen it mentioned in the bug fixes.

Never bought a "1.0" game with so many bugs. Game should be called a bugs life.
