I only store things that are needed in building and crafting certain things that you can not automate. That gave me 34 items (I think). Since I wanted to have it more compact I rounded up to 36 and made thus two rows with 9 storage containers on each side of the row (so 9 | 9 [nothing] 9 | 9). In the row to my right I have all the "often used" items with the most important right at the beginning (Iron plates, reinforced plates etc) so that when I need them I can grab them quicker. The more rarer they are used the further back they are. And stuff that is used but only for certain things that you aren't building all the time or in huge quantities (unless you are doing this on purpose) is in the left row.
I store 2 industrial storage containers per item and each storage container has a sign showing what is in it.
The remaining two slots were previously, before Update 6, filled with black powder which back then I didn't have automated (so more handcrafted because doggo brought sulfur and coal) because I heard of the change for ammo so I waited on that (and I made a separate storage for that since these news came after I made my main storage). Now they are used for Filters and Iodine Filters which are automated.
Of course the whole thing is overflow protected with a sink at the end and to reduce space usage I used programmable splitters (since it is a mixed line coming in and I wanted to build this nice).
Though in the end it comes down to how you want to store it and how you want it to look like. I have more the concept of "aesthetics = functional" so there is pretty much no decoration.

It can be seen in the distance on the left side of the screenshot.
just a rough idea if my first container is concrete..the single most used thing in my game
then I have iron plates, reinforforced plates, steem beam, alclad plates....you probably see the pattern here...its the belt materials
after that I think I have steel pipes, rods, and things like this, followed by wire, caterium wire then I shift into plastic/oil/rubber things including fuel
then above all these I do things like rotors, stators, motors, then maybe the frames (all three of them), then electronic things leading up to super computers.
I am just sort of pulling this out of memory but what I have is roughly something like that.
in order to do this I had to sit down and figure out every single thing I would likely ever store in the entire game and plan things out.....I just made a sign for each item and just posted them on containers and shifted them around until I liked what I saw.
Like everything else in the game there is no wrong way to do it. it just has to work for you and make sense to you and help you find things easier.
1st row I have all ore plus crystal and Mycelia.
2nd row is the product that comes from the ore such as ingots and the quartz crystal and concrete.
3rd row is copper, iron and aluminium products including wire...
It's easier if I just show you.

But storing ore is too much like storing the lint that comes out of the clothes dryer.
Just because you can keep it around, doesn't mean you should keep it around.
On the one hand, it's true many things have surprising uses. On the other hand, most people aren't lighting fires with flint, steel, and kindling for their Wilderness Survival merit badge on a routine basis.
Nothing bad will happen if you don't keep storages full of ore in Satisfactory. In fact, you are always better off using your inventory to hold more useful items than ore except at the very beginning.
