Scanning hard drives shouldn't give random recipes
I see no reason for including what is essentially a loot box. In the awesome shop we can pick what we buy with the tickets, it should be the same with the hard drives. They should give you access to a list of all alternate recipes instead of just 3. Many people will simply save and reload until they get the recipe they need (which is what I'm doing currently)

To specify, I mean that every hard drive should allow you to pick one new recipe but it shouldn't roll 3 random ones but let you pick from a list of all that are in the game.

theres a mod that just unlocks them all. ye they re kinda annoying

Collect more hard drives. There are more hard drives on the map than alt recipes.

Ah, you're save scumming.

The random recipe system is designed to enhance multiple playthroughs by adding an rng element. You never know what alternates you'll get, so each subsequent playthrough will be slightly (or significantly) different.

I suggest you try playing the game and never reloading an older save. You might surprise yourself with how fun it could be.

So yes, it should give random recipes, based on your unlock progress.

The alternative recipes offered from a hard drive are indeed RNG, but the pool they are offered from isn't, and this pool only changes as you complete research and tiers. If you manage when you advance in tech, you can somewhat control which recipes you will be offered.

For example, the best way to unlock cast screws is to gather a few hard drives when first starting a game. This is because the recipe pool is the smallest it will essentially be throughout the game. As you start completing milestones and MAM research, more recipes are added, diluting your overall odds of seeing any particular recipe until you thin it out again with hard drives.

Meanwhile, others are asking for randomized resource nodes to change things up.

that last line made me chuckle, "many people are doing this cause i am doing it"
the thought to save scum didn't even occur to me as there are way more hard drives than recipes from my understanding, and actually gives you one of the few reasons to explore more. i think its fine the way it is

man, i hope nobody tell him that at some point we used to have to wait for the hard drive RNG to get turbo fuel lol

...as it should be.

If recipes were to no longer be random, I would suggest they be tied to specific locations. Want that sloppy alumina recipe? It's up on that specific cliff there, surrounded by gas plants and stingers. Have fun.

I actually like that a lot, it feels like it would be more fun than a simple tech tree or big list of choices.

Small problem, but it may be frustrating for new players to get recipes they can't use yet; currently you only can unlock ones according to your tech tier, but if you only ever get one recipe from one crash you can't always give one that the player can use.

You'd also need to consider the crash pod requirements related to their recipie tier. If Cast Screws needs a stack of Reenforced Modular Frames I'm uninstalling lol

I just ignore the hard drive, yeah that kind of randomness is kinda annoying, does feel a bit loot-box-y,
Random resource nodes (new games only obviously) would be good tho.

Stepping back to the story in the game, the hard drives are supposed to be the damaged drives from crashed pods, and the MAM is trying to salvage some kind of information from them.

Given that, I find it weird that it gives you a choice of what to accept from that analysis instead of just informing you what it was able to discover, as in "hey, I examined this drive and found 3 recipes, but I'm only going to let you know about one of them -- you choose". Seems like a better "story" would be to just give you whatever it found, whether that be 1, 2, or whatever number of recipes.

I'm ok with some degree of randomness (and even limited by tech tree pre-requisites) in order that multiple playthroughs give a somewhat different result, but the choice aspect seems odd to me.

I guess the other thing about hard drives is that setting up bio power all the time is probably my least favourite part of the early game (maybe more for me as I set up a huge hyperloop network and also Im used to solar from other games) so having to set up multiple bio generators just to get some optional thing just put me off getting them. I'll probably do them when Ive finished the main progression.

I get you all, some of you like it and that's cool. I just don't like the fact that in a game where optimising is so important you put in this RNG based mechanic.

Also, I don't feel a bit bad about save "scumming". I want the darn recipe and I'm not going to run around the empty map to find enough drives to finally get one at random chance. I Also play with peaceful mobs and I'm really glad devs included that option in the game.
