You should also note that there are many small resources that you have to mine by hand, including uranium in the Red Forest, of which I have many.
that said, it seems it was a bug as now it seems to have fixed itself or something, as there is no longer any radiation in or around the station. very weird happenings but i guess thats just early access bugs?
