If you hate the spiders and the in-game arachnophobia mode then give the true Arachnophobia mode mod a try. It removes the spiders entirely along with their sounds. For the MAM you can turn spitter remains into stinger remains (you won't get more of the one btw.).

It depends on what type of mod you're looking for.
Mods that add content? E.g. New parts to make, new buildings to make them in?
Mods that add new things to achieve? E.g. new tiers?
Mods to make building things easier? E.g. mass place foundations, or copy/paste factories?

There are mods for all of that.

The first one I plan to add displays icon and count of container contents.

Logistics for me is the area I think could benefit the most from modding. As a first step anyway.

Best mods is a matter of perspective and it depends on how you want to play.

For me tho, there are really only 3 mods you need to completely change the way you play.

1) PAK Utility Mod, This allows you to fly from the start ( only reason I use it) and even unlock everything if you want a free "creative" play.

2) Smart Foundations mod, It's like Zooping but better in every way. I actually think they added the Zoop feature because of this Mod since the Mod came out long before Zooping did.

3) Modular Load Balancing mod, It literally takes care of every issue anyone has ever had with splitters, mergers, programmable's, load balancing.

EDIT:
Mods that can't hurt to have"

4) Settings Copier: A hand device that will let you copy and paste machine recipes, signs, and what not just by pointing and clicking. Again, this is a mod that was made before they actually added the copy and paste feature.

5) Super Chainsaw: Cut down a larger area of foliage.

6) Small Awesome Sink: The size of the awesome sink is a bit annoying when your trying to just test a production line.. This 1x1 wonder is awesome.

7) 300 or 500 Inventory Slots: This is useful if your using the super chainsaw mod/

one of my favorite mods that i run is the 100+ more milestones.. starts out easy enough but as I progress the recipes and machines get more and more complex. but be warned.. the power requirements get insane. I'm generating 170 Gigawatts and I will soon need to expand my already massive nuke plant.
other is the true arachnophobia mode that was already listed.
No Fog
Item teleporter - however having to many may or may not lag out your game.
Personal teleporter - Fun!
Infinite filters - only need one filter of each in inventory
No gas pillars
Cheap Power Shards - i don't even both collecting slugs anymore as I have 2 industrial containers full of shards now.
BIG storage and mega a$$ water pump

May add more but currently t his is it.

EasyCheat
because of the flight mode I love it so to build.
and
No Early Access Mark
I hate this screen defacement.

Top ones for me:

PAK Utility
Road Tool
Smart! (this is a godsend)
Settings Copier (its a tool not just control C/V)
SkyUI (lets you change night/day etc)
JustFly
CustomHud
All Poles with Indicator Light

I have a few more, but these are the best I think

Something to keep in mine, updates tend to break mods. If you use any mods that your factories depend on to run, there is a chance you won't be able to play that game till the mods are updated.

It doesn't need to be a major update, were up to what 7.11 now?

Every patch no matter the size has the potential to break something.

Eventually you will probably have to for the sake of support, bug fixes, mod versions, etc.; there's no legal way to downgrade from an update, so if you have your game set to auto update, you'll be boned.
