Mods that add content? E.g. New parts to make, new buildings to make them in?
Mods that add new things to achieve? E.g. new tiers?
Mods to make building things easier? E.g. mass place foundations, or copy/paste factories?
There are mods for all of that.
Logistics for me is the area I think could benefit the most from modding. As a first step anyway.
For me tho, there are really only 3 mods you need to completely change the way you play.
1) PAK Utility Mod, This allows you to fly from the start ( only reason I use it) and even unlock everything if you want a free "creative" play.
2) Smart Foundations mod, It's like Zooping but better in every way. I actually think they added the Zoop feature because of this Mod since the Mod came out long before Zooping did.
3) Modular Load Balancing mod, It literally takes care of every issue anyone has ever had with splitters, mergers, programmable's, load balancing.
EDIT:
Mods that can't hurt to have"
4) Settings Copier: A hand device that will let you copy and paste machine recipes, signs, and what not just by pointing and clicking. Again, this is a mod that was made before they actually added the copy and paste feature.
5) Super Chainsaw: Cut down a larger area of foliage.
6) Small Awesome Sink: The size of the awesome sink is a bit annoying when your trying to just test a production line.. This 1x1 wonder is awesome.
7) 300 or 500 Inventory Slots: This is useful if your using the super chainsaw mod/

Every patch no matter the size has the potential to break something.
