Is there a way to upgrade an entire conveyor belt in one go instead of by segment?

No, each "segment" (from one pole to another, or a machine to a pole, etc) is a separate "object placement" within the game.

So if you have a long conveyor, you can only upgrade it one segment at a time.
(at least you can upgrade the belt in place; I don't think that wasn't always the case)

Yes, BUT you need to belt weld them together first: https://satisfactory.fandom.com/wiki/Conveyor_Belt#Belt_welding

(and be sure to have a ton of space when upgrading because of different stack sizes)

:O

I've not seen that before..... can't wait to experiment with it later.
I wonder if there's an absolute max length; and what would happen if you welded a conveyor across the width of the map - then upgraded it all at once. @.@

Thanks, have to try it, don't fully understand it, but it kinda seems more work than upgrading segment by segment. By be worth it though, if I have a belt I plant to upgrade through several tiers.

"Belt welding
The maximum length of 56 meters per segment can be bypassed by doing the following in sequence:

First build 2 segments of belts end-to-end
Remove the belt support at the joint
Place a Merger at the joint
Dismantle the Merger
The 2 belt segments are now welded into a single segment. Use this method to extend the belt length."

You probably would not have enough inventory space for the upgrade mats, then the only solutions would be to either keep that way or destroy the whole thing in one go.

Or maybe you can still build the supports and separate a big segment into 2?

I know inventory would be an issue; it was more of a theoretical "Would it bring the game to a slideshow crawl or an engine crash?" type of thought. :D

Performance might be the best aspect in this game, I'm surprised that with so many objects in the game, there's no memory leaks or performance issues so far. Which is very common in other games even 2D ones.

They're using Unreal, so they're probably just relying on the engine's built in garbage collection to prevent most if not all leaks. By default, the engine automatically deletes objects that are no longer referenced by anything else, which is the typical way memory leaks happen.
